General Information

G reetings and welcome to the Seas of Blood expansion for Warhammer Quest. The purpose of this page is to provide the rules and background necessary for Warhammer Quest players to expand their games into the universe of Titan as presented in the Fighting Fantasy novel #16, Seas of Blood.

Warhammer Quest is a miniature-based dungeoneering game. It was produced by Games-Workshop, one of the largest companies of miniatures and miniature-based wargames out there. Warhammer Quest uses card board sections, randomly determined by drawing cards from a special deck, to determine the layout of a dungeon. At higher levels of roleplaying, a Game Master creates the dungeon independently of the board sections and deck. A party of Warriors, traditionally four but any number is acceptable, are controlled by the players. Each Warriors plays a different Character. There are dozens of kinds of Characters to be played, each with their own unique characteristics and abilities.

As the Warriors explore the dungeons, they will encounter Events. Events are either drawn from a deck or rolled on a table. Events are, more often than not, Monsters. There are many, many different type of Monsters for the Warriors to confront. Once the Monsters are defeated, the Warriors are rewarded with gold and treasure (also drawn or rolled).

In between quests, the Warriors may visit Settlements, where they can use their gold to make purchases, both character-specific and not, train to go up a battle-level, and perform other activities. Both in the settlement and whilst traveling there are Events which generally affect the Warrior's gold.

Warhammer Quest is based in the Warhammer World, created by Games-Workshop and also the host to many other of their games, such as Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Warmaster, Bloodbowl and Man O' War.
The background of the Warhammer World is very richly detailed, with comprehensive geographies and histories, and in-depht studies of the various groups and races that populate it.

As I have already said, Seas of Blood is a Fighting Fantasy novel, written by Andrew Chapman and richly illustrated by Bob Harvey. Fighting Fantasy novels are gamebooks in which the reader takes the role of the main character, and using a system of numbered paragraph, makes all the decisions for that character. Fighting Fantasy novels also includes fighting opponents, and so a system for fighting using dice is introduced in every novel. Both Warhammer Quest and Fighting Fantasy makes great use of dice!

Most, but not all, Fighting Fantasy novels take place on the Sphere of Titan, a fantasy world which is in turn divided into continents and regions, much like the Warhammer World. In this case, Seas of Blood takes place in Khul, also known as the Dark Continent. The region of interest to us is in the south, where the ocean enchroches inland, strong cities rise and dastardly pirates raid.

THE EXPANSION PACK

Both Warhammer Quest and Fighting Fantasy are game systems which have seen better days. Fighting Fantasy was very powerful during the eighties, but over the last decade have become discontinued, out of prints, and largely forgotten by all but the dedicated fans. Likewise, Warhammer Quest was taken out of production a few years ago, and Games-Workshop has stopped almost all WHQ related production except for Deathblow, a bi-annual fan-written magazine. The fans have realized that to survive, both these systems must expand, and so have taken upon themselves to write new rules or gamebooks.

I, being an amateur of both these systems, decided to give both a boost by expanding them into each other. There is, of course, ample room in both systems for expansion within the system itself, but I felt that I would be helping both parties in this way. So, this website is a combination of the rules from Warhammer Quest with the background taken from Fighting Fantasy #16, Seas of Blood. The site is mainly for WHQ players, but there is no reason why Fighting Fantasy adepts cannot enjoy the site for the background and illustrations provided, giving fresh insight into their favorite fantasy world.

The site is divided into two sections, Regional and the Compendiums. Regional goes through the area introduced to us in Seas of Blood region by region, providing background and flavor for each locale. Additionaly, each Regional page will contain various rules for playing WHQ in that region, such as bestiaries, treasure, quests, NPCs (non-player characters). There will also be region-specific material, such as Settlement Event tables, maps and illustrations. All but a few of the illustrations in the Regional section of the Seas of Blood website are originally drawn by Bob Harvey, who illustrated the Seas of Blood novel. I tried to eyeball recopy them onto my computer (with various degrees of success), and added color since Seas of Blood was in black and white.

The Compendiums gather all the rules from various Regional pages onto one webpage. The Bestiary compiles all of the Monsters introduced by this website. The Monsters are either existing Monsters which a few modifications made to reflect their background, or Monsters from the book liberally converted to WHQ by myself. If a Monster is neither of the above, i.e. not one of my Monsters, proper credit shall be indicated under the Monster's profile.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

No site can really be made 'alone', especially not a site like this. I would like to thank, in no particular order: Everyone from the Warhammer Quest mailing list, for providing such a fascinating forum of discussion and helping me out when I had questions on the rules; Mark J. Popp, FightingFantasy.com and the Fighting Fantasy mailing list for allowing me to understand the background of Titan and Khul; Andrew Chapman, who wrote Seas of Blood, for providing me with such a varied and detailed world to expand upon; Bob Harvey, whose illustrations really served to flesh out Seas of Blood and whose great work I have shamelessly ripped off; Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone for creating both Fighting Fantasy and Games-Workshop (I would like to think that they would be pleased to see someone combining the two); Games-Workshop for creating Warhammer Quest, and inspiring me to try and achieve the same level of detail with this site that they have with the Warhammer World (of course, I failed, but that's not the point :-)); Fortune City for hosting this site and ZyWeb for providing an easy template to designing the site.

It is possible that this site has violated copyrights. If so, I assure you that it was unintentionaly, I that I greatly admire the work of everyone cited above and do not wish to offend them. Please contact me if you have any questions or complaints.

And, to sign off, I leave you with a few images I hope will add more flavor to the project and this site. My hat goes off too the Fighting Fantasy mailing list for the picture of Titan's eastern hemisphere (the area in question on this site is boxed in and colored), and to Alex Eddy for letting me borrow the cover from Seas of Blood from his mosaic of all the covers.
