Members Guide to Infinity Wanderers

Part 1: Set-up

The site distinguishes between editors and members in a number of important ways.

Editors - these are the people controlling the site ; they have the sole right to alter the gateway pages and add the links from there to members' content, and also to create transverse links that pass between different people's work (these won't be created without consultation) ; the editors are responsible for keeping the site manageable and easy to understand. They are also responsible for enforcing standards and any offensive or irrelevant material will be deleted by the editors . In the last resort the editors control the password to the site through the infinitywanderers@888.nu email address and will act to change it in order to deny access if this becomes necessary.

Members - those who pass the 'trust' threshold will be given their own rights of access to the site. The basic test for the 'trust' threshold is to have posted at least semi-regularly at the Del Rey Discussion Forum or at the Warships1 Naval Fiction Board ; for those who haven't 'trust' will be ajudged to have been met upon the production of material for the site which in the first instance the editors will require to be emailed to them. Once past the 'trust' test members will be given the username/password for the website and be free to upload their stuff to the relevant SUB-DIRECTORY (Please keep the top-level directory free ; failure to comply could see the editors remove your work into the relevant sub-directory).The sub-directories are divided into eras and the correct one for any piece of alternate history is when the Point of Divergence occurred, not when the actual storyline is set.

The editors will be responsible for tying uploaded work into the gateway pages and choosing which sections gain greater prominence in the 'Featured' frame on the main frontpage. In order to make the job of the editors manageable members are advised to email them with details of what they have uploaded so that the editors do not have to spend ages trawling through sub-directories and trying to work it out for themselves.

Part 2 : Explanations

So, what can be hosted here ? The simple answer is anythng that meets the definition of 'Alternate History' in its broadest sense - timelines, 'histories', stories, action reports etc. The style and method of presenting the content are entirely up to the contributor. The editors of Infinity Wanderers are also quite willing to provide a TEMPORARY home for any epics whose eventual destination may be intended to be elsewhere - we will respect all copyrights and give full attribution to any work ; we will also remove any work upon request of its author.

So, by what means does a member publish their own work at this site ? This depends upon their knowledge and understanding of HTML and their willingness to experiment - remember in the last resort nothing worse is going to happen than it failing to work ! If you are capable at using coding then create your pages and use the File Manager to upload to the required sub-directory. If you are not so capable you have a number of choices. Those with IE5 will find Microsoft FrontPage lurking in their computer's Program Files directory and should be encouraged to play around with this, dropping in chunks of text and seeing it format them. Choose the 'save as file' option and then you have something to upload. Beware though that the filename from FrontPage is usually .htm so if you are thinking of creating internal links please make sure they work ! Alternatively you can use FortuneCity's online page creation tool - don't be scared ; you can't kill the website by getting it wrong. If you remain completely befuddled and have content you are desperate to put up please send ONE page to the editors at

infinitywanderers@888.nu

marked 'Please Format' in the suject/title box and we will code that page and provide a tutorial/explanatory attachment so that you can rely on this in order to code your further pages. In exceptional circumstances one of the editors may agree to code an entire offering - but this is not to be relied upon ! It is a personal decision and time constraints will often mitigate against such generosity. . .

Part 3 : Other Questions Answered . . .

- Is there a fee ?
Absolutely not ! Apart from being completely against FortuneCity's terms and conditions it would be entirely against the whole purpose of the site which is to promote the work of AMETEURS .

- What constitutes offensive/inappropriate material ?
You already know the answer to this one! If in doubt moderate what you are about to write - you can always produce a 'director's cut' for private emailing later. Obviously distasteful practices occur and mention of these does not bring censure ; just be careful in HOW they are portrayed.

- What about photographs etc ?
Please inform the editors of any LARGE files you are using ; there will be no ban on anything for the time-being. Be advised that in common with the general practice throughout the internet we will delete photographs if (and only if) the copyright holder instructs us to do so - this is an exceedingly rare occurrence and in general any pictures can be carried ; however, it is a legal safeguard for us to make clear our willingness to do this.

- Will we run out of space ?
That seems extremely unlikely in the short to medium term ! FortuneCity offers 100 MB of space (which is why we chose them . . . ) and the majority of files that are uploaded will be relatively tiny text files. Don't fear that you will overload us by uploading your magnum opus ; you won't.

We hope to have answered all of your questions
but if we haven't please email us
and ask directly whatever it is that is concerning you !
