A Brief History of Tarot

D'Sorceress

est. Jan 1999

Tarot reading is a very old discipline; its origins are lost in the mists of Time. Many different cultures claim to be the first to read Tarot cards, but I believe the best evidence we have indicates that the Romanies (otherwise known as Gypsies) brought the talent with them from an even more ancient beginning, which some say might be the Mesopotamian region during the reign of the ancient Pharaohs.

However the use of Tarot Cards began, they have been accepted the world over as a remarkably insightful method of discourse with the Spirit Self; that part of us which some call Intuition and others the Sixth Sense.

The interesting thing is that the Cards do not seem to mind whether the Querent (the person requesting a Reading) believes in their efficacy or not; as long as the Diviner is competent, the Readings continue to be uncannily accurate.

There are many different types and styles of Tarot decks, and each has its own peculiar strengths and weaknesses for specific Spreads, but all have certain things in common. The majority of Tarot Decks have some variation on this theme:

Most Tarot decks consist of 78 cards; which are further broken down into the 22 Major Arcana and the 56 Minor Arcana. The meanings of the Cards can vary based on their Presentation; i.e. Upright or "Reversed."

The Major Arcana are also commonly referred to as Trumps, and are considered to be the more "powerful" Cards. Usually, many Trumps in a Reading indicate that forces are at work on a Higher Plane, beyond the direct control or influence of the Querent.

The Minor Arcana include the Court Cards and the Pips. There are four Suits in the Minor Arcana: Pentacles, Wands, Cups, and Swords; each having four Court Cards (Kings, Queens, Knights, and Pages) and ten Pips, Ace thru Ten.

Each Suit is aligned with one of the Compass Points, and one of the Elements; Swords are the Suit of Air and the North, Pentacles are the Suit of Earth and the South, Cups are the Suit of Water and the East, and Wands are the Suit of Fire and the West.

There are many other associations within the Tarot Disciplines; certain Cards or Suits in different Spreads can be related to the Mystic Qabalah, the Signs of the Zodiac, Numerology, etc. The Cards have long been used in conjunction with Meditation to provide Enlightenment.
