Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded in 1913 at Howard University by 22 industrious college women who demonstrated a vital concern for social welfare, academic excellence, and cultural enrichment in order to de-emphasize the social side of sorority life.
The Delta's public service program centers around its Five-Point thrusts: Educational Development, Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and Involvement, International Awareness and Involvement, and Economic Development.
Today, Delta Sigma Theta is a public service organization dedicated to a program of sharing membership skills and organizational service in the public's interest. There are over 200,000 members in over 870 chapters nationwide and in the republics of Haiti, Liberia, and Korea as well as various other places globally.
