Remembrance ~ The Purpose of HisStory
What is the purpose of HisStory and why is it so important? I refer to "history" as "His Story" so that we may not lose perspective of His marvelous works and be tempted to make "history" a generic term lest we forget His Providential Hand. Providence being the act of Him providing for and preparing His Bride individually and corporately for future use in the advancement of the Kingdom of Heaven, for His Glory and for the anticipated wedding with Jesus Christ--the Bridegroom!
Godly "heritage" refers to God's people, those claimed by Him and the objects of His care. We are His heritage! It is an awesome thought that He chose us!
Remembering HisStory is important to the corporate body of Christ as well as to the individual. Is not our Christian faith dependent upon remembering His work on the cross and His promised return? The word "remember" (in various forms) appears 265 times in scripture. We can acquire wisdom and build our faith by reading scripture and personal accounts of HisStory. Are you presently faced with seemingly insurmountable odds? Think back to the past and remember how God brought you through seemingly impossible trials. He may not have done it the way you thought He should have; but, it was the best way for you. Have you realized that He cares for you and knows you better than you do? Do you thank God you don't have to rely upon your own fallible understanding? Events of your past are foundation stone for your faith to face the future. Your past was HisStory in the making and this present moment is HisStory being played out for His purposes. Keep in mind that His thoughts and purposes are for your good.
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord,
thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."
Jeremiah 29:11
God rebuked His people to the point of forgetting their children because they had forgotten His laws and the Truth! I don't know about you, but as a mother, I certainly don't want God to forget my children. I would rather God forsake me as long as He remembers my children. I take the scripture seriously when it states that the sins of the parents are visited amongst our children unto the third and fourth generations. This definitely gives me incentive to walk and talk and search my heart for any wickedness (Psalm 139:23). I pray the meditation of my heart and the words of my mouth are acceptable in His sight (Psalm 19:14)! I challenge you to read scripture referring to the word "remember" and see for yourself the consequences of forgetting His marvelous works that He performed and what He has foretold that He will do.
To read, one must have "written." In Genesis, we see the origin of writing when "God set a mark upon Cain lest any finding him should kill him." Throughout scripture, writing is for the purpose of recording to bring us into "remembrance" of what God has done or will do. God knows that man so easily forgets and, by his sinful nature, walks by sight--not by faith. That is why it is so important to read His Word and daily set His Word before your eyes that you might remember by faith what God promises.
Our future depends on the fact that God does NOT remember our sins because of the shed blood of the Lamb and in His remembering and writing us into the Book of Life. Writing, the recording of HisStory, gives us hope and confidence for our present pilgrimage. The written word enables us to memorize God's Word for the purpose of hiding it in our hearts so that we might not sin against Him.
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Psa 119:11
Where does HisStory take place? Where is the stage for man to act out His Story? Earth! God Himself formed the earth and made it not in vain but He formed it to be inhabited (Isaiah 45:18). to "remember" HisStory requires us to study geography. Every subject on earth was created by Him and has its origin and purpose in Him and is all part of HisStory.
For by Him all things were created . . . all things were created by Him and for Him.
Colossians 1:16
I assert that we:
1. Remember HisStory in the individual lives of His people from Genesis up to the present day.
2. Search out the Truth about His people from His people as the Bereans searched scripture. Thus, not too just read and believe what pagan writers and historians, who do not have a heart for God nor eyes to see the Truth, have written.
3. Throw off our slothfulness in thought and reasoning and discover for ourselves what is truth and how the TRUTH--JESUS operated in the individual's life.
4. Challenge past and present day historian's writings by reading the actual writings of those we wish to study and learn about or read the writings of those who personally knew them.
Failure to diligently go to the source to remember and search out our Godly heritage has allowed the world and Christians to unknowingly rewrite HisStory. Thus, we have committed the sin of bearing false witness against our neighbor--God's people and God Himself by denying His great works and deeds. We must remember where and how He brought us out of Egypt (the world).
America is reaping havoc or losing the art of remembrance. We are lost and without purpose for not knowing our God-given inheritance as a nation and as a people. We must ignite the fire to want to know where the Lord brought us from, how He got us here, and what His purpose for us is as individuals and as a nation.
With the Lord's help, I will endeavour to unfold before your eyes that, throughout HisStory, no plan of God has been thwarted (Job 42:2 NIV). HisStory was, is and will always be fulfilled in the lives of individuals and nations, while simultaneously in the body of Christ, to accomplish His purpose for His glory. He sees the forest while we only see and are the trees. God always provides for and prepares each of His people before the events of HisStory for the furtherance of the Gospel of His Son Jesus Christ in every nation throughout the world. My prayer will be that you and your children will be struck with awe at His marvelous deeds and be encouraged in faith to face the days to come and to occupy until His imminent return!
