Guidance WHO IS A GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR ?

A certified, specially trained, professional.
A person who can help students.
An individual who assists teachers, administrators, and parents in better understanding students.
 

WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF GUIDANCE COUNSELLING ?

TO HELP STUDENTS:
feel good about themselves.
better understand themselves.
make better decisions about their lives during and after high school.
discuss their personal concerns.
overcome crisis situations.
 

HOW DOES A STUDENT SEE A GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR ?

Self - referral and drop-in.
Parent request.
Referral by teacher and other staff members.
request by a friend.
Appointment made by counsellor.

WHAT DOES A GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR DO ?

Counsels students individually and in groups.
Listens to students' worries.
Helps students through difficult times.
Help students make decisions about courses and careers.
Gives ability, achievement, and interest tests.
Refers students to outside resources.
Provides information about education, careers, health, and community resources.
Consults with teachers, parents, doctors, and other professionals.
Provides special programs which help students in their development (CHOICES, Peer Tutoring).
Provides emergency crisis service.
Acts as a resource person regarding such issues as conflict resolution and behavior management.

School Nurse

Health services in school are designed to help students to look after their health and to think critically about their lifestyle and milieu, in a healthy environment.
Besides favouring the early detection of health problems, the school nurse is there to provide consultative, information and referral services as needed.
