I was a little mad at my cousin for not fixing her cat - but I wanted a cat MY own responsibility, a life-long friend - and I wanted to give an innocent creature a chance. So I begged. I begged and begged my mom and offered to pay vet bills. I know you cat-conscious humane people want to help out too- so here's what you can do!
1. Spay/neuter your pet. This is good for you AND your pet. Undesireable behaviors (sraying, for example) will not be a problem. And your queen won't attract all those noisy toms. Your cat will also be more friendly, and less susceptible to some very serious diseases. All that and more for $20 a pop!
2. Volunteer at an animal shelter. If you have time, this can be a very rewarding program. YOu can bond with animals and get a chance to socialize them - handling and petting them makes them more friendly and they'll have a better chance of being adopted. But be careful of your emotions if euthanasia is used at the shelter.
3. Fix another person's cat. If you have a neighbor with an unfixed cat,(or d*g) talk to them about the importance of spaying/neutering. If they still aren't convinced, maybe offering to pay would do the trick. If you have the income, why not?
4. Support causes that go to homeless animals. You can buy the Morris 99 calendar (you know the 9 lives cat your kitties sigh about? =^..^=)Well, go to this link right HERE and see what you can do to help!
5. If that doesn't make you want to help, read this poem. It's very touching and I almost cried. Leia's getting fixed the second she's old enough. Anyway:
The "Miracle" of life "Come quick, come quick", their mother said "The time is getting near"
She feels that when the kittens come the children should be here.
She told them that a big orange Tom took "Kitty" as his wife
"It's wonderful, a gift from God, the miracle of life"
At half a year young "Kitty" feels too painful and too scared
to appreciate six miracles, blind-eyed and yellow haired.
But she knows these lives depend on her and nature tells her how
and as she cleans them, children ask "Mom, can we go now?"
But now and then for six more weeks the children visit her
to play with six new magic toys made of life and fur.
The six weeks pass, the newness gone and new homes yet unfound,
Mom bundles up six miracles and takes them to the pound,
Where lovingly, with gentle hands and no tears left to cry,
the shelter workers kiss them once and take them off to die.
And "Momma Kitty" now shes called mourns her loss and then,
she's put outside, and of course, she's pregnant once again.
Dad tells "Kitty" STOP THIS NOW or you wont live here long!
but deep inside of Momma Cat, this time something's wrong.
Too young, too small, too often bred now nature's gone awry,
Momma Kitty feels it too and she crawls off to die.
She too is freed from this cruel world, and from her time of strife.
How harsh the truth, how high the price this "Miracle of Life"?
