Whitewater Falls
At 411 feet Whitewater Falls is the highest Fall east of the Rockies. The Falls are near the NC/SC state line southwest of Lake Toxaway in the Highlands Ranger District.
Nantahala National Forest covers southwestern North Carolina. Named after the Nantahala River and Gorge. Nantahala meant 'land of the noon day sun' to the Cherokee, since they believed sunlight only hit the bottom of the Gorge at Midday.
Nantahala is home to Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest which is southwest of the Great Smokies. This is a rugged region with lots of waterfalls.
