General Info:
Because you must incorporate the Cat Gap Loop Trail in with this hike the total hike is about 5 miles. The John Rock Trail breaks off the Cat Gap Trail at the intersection of Cat Gap Bypass Trail. Or you can hike along the Davidson River from the fish hatchery on Cat Gap and climb up to John Rock that way. John Rock trail breaks from Cat Gap trail at a creek crossing, but the trail is not marked on this side of Cat Gap. Going this way (clockwise) will make this a strenuous hike. Taking this trail from a Counter clockwise direction on Cat Gap Loop makes this a moderate hike.
This is a good hike for views of Looking Glass Rock, the Fish Hatchery and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The top of the cliff is a bit more level than the top of Looking Glass Rock. Also this trail can be combined with Art Loeb Bypass (Cedar Rock) , Butter Gap Trail as well to make a long, strenuous loop hike.
