The Port Huron lightship, because of dangerous conditions and cost savings, was one of those light houses that was needed but not in a good place for a permanent light house structure. The light was located on the top of the mast, along with fog horns this lightship was operated by its crew. The lightship Huron, was retired in 1971 making it the last operating light ship on the great Lakes. Today, it is a national historical monument.

Tied up at the entrance of the St.Clair river, the ship is open to the public and sitting alongside a peaceful park. The day we went, it was sunny and warm , so we spent a couple hours enjoying the water, the people, the baseball field across a street along with the light ship and the passing freighters. this is also one of the busiest traffic area for recreational boats in the Michigan are great Lakes area.
