South Manitou Island is locate just off the Michigan shoreline, and can be seen for miles, from the north and South. The island is seven miles off the shore, flanked by "North Manitou Island".The islands are right out from the "Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, near Empire,Glenn arbor, west of Traverse City. The story of the "sleeping Bear dunes " is a wonderfull one.To be short,it is the story of a mother bear and her cubs who need to flee the Wisconson shoreline because of a forest fire. They swim into Lake Michigan, mother leading, helping her cubs all the way.A storm comes up,waves become large and they begin to wear out.The mother continues, cubs falling further behind.Soon the mother bear can't see her cubs anymore and swims to the Michigan shore.Once there, she calls them, encourages them, and promises to wait for them.So she lays on the shore legend says, waiting, for years. After time ,sand piles over her, creating the large dunes over looking her cubs. They are "North and South Manitou Islands".

The picture on the right is of the sleeping bear dunes, with south Manitou Island in the background.

The tower of the lighthouse is 100 feet tall and helps ships navagate the water between North and South Manitou.
