St. Joseph North Pier Lights
![]()

The Saint Joseph river empties into Lake Michigan.
Where this occurs , is where the North Pier Lights are located.
Just over the Indiana border, off I-94 heading east into
Michigan. It was established in 1832,the first Lighthouse ever built
on Lake Michigan. A wooden pier was built 14 years later, a steel outer
light was erected in1907.The shore light, was in use till 1955, when it was
demolised. Both lights on the pier, still operate. The simple steel light is 30 feet tall, the
inner light is a larger building, two stories high in red and white.Located at the end of a
catwalk, 300 or more yards from shore.Today, just north of the pier is Tiscornia Park. This
allows for picnicking and other activities. The town of Saint Joseph, was a pleasant
surprise, with its quaint shops and clean appearance.
