surgeon points Lighthouse was built in 1870, and still stands today
as a beautiful piece of our heritage. Due to the efforts of the local historical society,
the Lighthouse and the Tower have been refurbished to their original conditions.
The building today is a historical Lighthouse Museum.
Surgeon Point is still owned by the United States Coast Guard, which opens
the 70 foot Tower to the public several times a year even though it is active.
The museum itself is open from 9 till 4 every day during the summer.
If a person were to look from the sky, they would see the importance
of putting a Lighthouse in this location. The shoreline juts out
like a point on both the North and the south sides. There is also a strip of gravel
that goes out several feet directly in front of the Lighthouse into the water.
one of the more striking features of this Lighthouse is the bright
white tower and the vivid red shutters and doors that set them off.
