Whitefish Point Light

whitefishpoint

Whitefish Point Light, was built in 1849,making it one of the first two lighthouses built on lake Superior. Built at the entrance to Whitefish Bay,this made it a very important navigational light.Ships quite often would seek refuge there from the sometimes deadly Lake Superior storms.Even though it is now automated, it is still an important marker for freighters and other ships. The modern tower which replaced the original during the Civil War is 80 feet tall.Operated by the coast gaurd, the large house was their station. The Coast Gaurd still maintains the grounds.

In a large building located on the grounds,is located the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum and manned by its historical society.Descriptions, artifacts and stories, are housed here. This is because just off shore, is the area known as the Graveyard Of The Great Lakes,a place where many a ship has gone down, including the famous "Edmond Fitzgerald"
