Sanchin is an exercise which places emphasis on the eyes, breathing, and posture. Proceeding from the sanchin stance, in in which the toes and knees are turned inward, the eyes never leave the attacker. Breathing is slow and natural. Inhalation follows a rising body action as well as the withdrawing of the arms or legs; exhalation follows lowering actions of the body, as well as the extensions of the arms or legs. Sanchin is the first kata in Uechi Ryu.
Okinawa, which means "rope in the offing" is the name of this beautiful island, which is said to look like a rope that has been knotted and carelessly tossed into the sea.
