Accident
Serendipity often plays a part in getting striking pictures (which is to say, i think, that great photographers often luck into great shots). Not to say either this photo or i am great, but i really like this accidental shot. One of my guiding principles in photographing for this website is to take the first shot i can get of anything new. That way i'm guaranteed something! Then i work for better position, closeups, lighting etc. as my goal here is documentation. I'm not trying to be Joe Photo. Anyway, i was showing these yellow flowers to Susan Sander in hopes she could identify them (still no) when the first Viceroy i'd seen since starting this site flew out of them and landed on a rock. I was trying to snap off a quick picture and this dang digital camera of course won't focus behind. I shot the picture anyway. There's just something about it that i like. The results of trying to photograph the Viceroy can be found on the Butterflies page.
