Corvid Specimen Pictures from LSU
These photos are of specimens from the Louisiana State University Museum of Zoology in Baton Rouge, January 2003. Many thanks to Dr. Van Remsen, Dr. Steve Cardiff, Dr. Donna Dittmann, and Kelly Bryan for the opportunity to study these and many other specimens.

The picture above left is a series of four Chihuahuan Ravens, Corvus cryptoleucus, showing a range of wear to the nasal bristles. The arrows point to the ends of the longest bristles. The picture on the right shows two Chihuahuan Ravens above and two Common Ravens, Corvus corax, below. Note the relative lengths of the nasal bristles among the group. The top Chihuahuan Raven has very worn bristles. The second Chihuahuan has bristle lengths in the more expected range. Note also slight differences in the overall shape and aspect of the bills, and differences in color -- the Chihuahuans have a brown cast to the plumage, while the Commons have a gunmetal black color with more blue and purple highlights. The picture below shows the same group of two Chihuahuans and two Commons for size and additional color comparisons between the two species. Some evidence of white neck feathering can be seen in the Chihuahuans; and patterning can be seen in the breast feathers of both. These are all digital photos.
