THE DRINKING GOURD
by F. N. MONJO
Pictures by FRED BRENNER
A book that gives our youth an introduction to the 'Underground Railroad'...And since this book is an 'easy reader', your young man or young lady may enjoy reading it themselves...but a little help is always a nice thing anyway...plus they are bound to have a lot of questions...So this is a book that should be read together.
Check out this excerpt from the book:
Chapter Three
ON THE UNDERGROUND
RAILROAD
Tommy and Father sat in the wagon. Jeff and Vinnie and Little Jeff and Baby Pearl were hidden in the hay. They were driving toward the river. "I been a slave all my life, Tommy," said Jeff, sitting up in the hay, "until two weeks ago. That was the day I decided we would run away to Canada on the underground railroad." "The underground railroad?" said Tommy. "Shoot, boy!" said Little Jeff. "You never heard about that neither?"
"You see, Tommy," said Father, "the underground railroad isn't a real railroad with steam engines and tracks and ears. It's a secret group of people who believe slavery is wicked. They live in homes and farms like ours, stretching from here to Canada. Everybody in the group hides people like Jeff and Vinnie, helping them get away." "And they got stations on the underground railroad," said Little Jeff. "Like our barn!" said Tommy.

SOUL LOOKS BACK

TOM FEELINGS
This book is a most thoughtful selection of poems by some of the best...Such as...Maya Angelou, Lucille Clifton, Langston Hughes, Darryl Holmes, Rashidah Ismaili, and many more...This book is very inspiring and a wonderful way to enhance your childs world of reading with poetry...Get them familiar with what some of the best have to offer. Check out this excerpt from the book, some of my favorites from the book that followed a powerful introduction by Tom Feelings:
To You
To sit and dream, to sit and read,
to sit and learn about the world
Outside our world of here and now---
Our problem world---
To dream of vast horizons of the soul
Through dreams made whole,
Unfettered, free---help me!
All you who are dreamers too,
Help me to make
Our world anew.
I reach out my dreams to you.
Langston Hughes
window morning
my ancestors having broken
have claimed a storm the earth womb
worn hollowed splitting the time
tree rooted trunk
i am the wasteland of my beginning
of our past my face
and at times naked to God's sun
there is no air
yet i am a green bud Mwatabu Okantah
Destiny
under volcanoes & timeless years within watch
and low tones. around corners, in deep caves among
misunderstood and sometimes meaningless sounds.
cut beggars, outlaw pimps & whores. resurrect work.
check your distance blue. come earthrise men
deepblack and ready, come sunbaked women rootculture on the move.
just do what you're supposed to do, what you say you gonta do
not the impossible, not the unimaginative,
not copy clothed as original and surely
not bitter songs in european melodies. take hold
do the necessary, the possible, the correctly simple
talk of missions & interpret destiny
put land and selfhood on the minds of our people
do the expected, do what all people do
reverse destruction. capture tomorrows.

'being black'
ZEN AND THE ART OF
living with
FEARLESSNESS AND GRACE
BY ANGEL KYODO WILLIAMS
| I am soooo digging this book. It focuses on a different approach to peacefulness with ones self. The three serious poisons Greed, Anger, and Ingnorance...that seem to plague our lives are discussed here with realistic resolutions; as well as clarity to the signs of falling for them. Also how to awaken the Warrior Spirit within. Oh, this book is truly inspiring. Check out this excerpt: |
|
| Here is a down to earth spiritual handbook for any black American searching for self-acceptance and lasting personal happiness. |
|
| This elegant, practical book combines the universal wisdom of Buddhism with an inspirational call for self-acceptance and community empowerment. Written by a woman who grew up facing the challenges that confront African-Americans every day. Being Black teaches us how a "warrior-spirit" of truth and responsibility toward oneself and others can be developed into the foundation for real happiness and personal transformation. |
|
| As Being Black explains, our "warror" aspect invites us to see that any true personal transformation is an act of revolution. Our "spirit" reminds us that this revolution is about our lives, so we must be patient, open, and giving toward ourselves and others. |
|
| With her eloquent, hip, and honest perspective, Angel Kyodo Williams -- a social activist and entrepreneur -- shares personal stories, time-tested teachings, and simple guidelines for tapping our warrior-spirit, inviting readers from all spritual faiths to step into the freedom of a life lived with fearlessness, grace and fluidity. |
|
| The principles and tools she offers provide a framework for creating the meaningful life we want to live. They can give us direction for addressing our worries, hopes, challenges, and expectations, thus changing the way we understand our experiences and live each moment. "There truly is an art to being here in this world," Williams says, "and like any art, it can be mastered." We can learn to honor our whole selves, just as we are, by just living, just doing, just being black. |

Experience
Intertwined V Conference -- (November 2002) Yes, I went and had a lovely time too. There were soooo many vendors there...WHEW! I knew that there would be products galore there...but I didn't count on the great creativity of the event.
Truely Imaginative Hair jewelry, Make Up Artistry, On the Spot Hair grooming, Clothes, Internal Health Advisors, Food (got there too late to enjoy that part - LOL)
But...I did get there in time to get some lovely photos for the Nappyhood...Enjoy :)
Here we are!!!!
These necklaces & jewelry are exquisite...
...this vendor had a bit of everything for the natural nappy princess or prince...
...now these beautiful gems are hair jewelry. Pieces designed to wrap around an actual [individual] 'Lock' , 'Twist', 'Braid'. I would believe that a creative person would be able to wrap this around a small section of hair as well. I really loved these...had to pick up a few. Ohh warm weather, hurry up already!!...:)
Now this is truely something that really took me by surprise. Pictured here is the bamboo 'Earspear', a spear that separates to fasten on to
your [pierced] ear...similar to an ear ring...Tres Chic.
Here are more accessories from the same company that has designed the 'Earspear'. More bamboo artistry obviously developed for the eclectic taste bud. Featured here with lovely turquoise, beads, etc. Another favorite spot of mine at the fair.
Handcrafted ear rings...
...even jeweled toe thongs...
...and wonderful fashions appealing to the natural nappie's sense of individual style and need for creative expression. Just a taste of the unique types of garments at the fair.
I will definitely look forward to visiting some of these vendors on their own home turf. That's a WHOLE LOTTA shopping around...I am hoping for an early thaw to this COLD WINTER - BRRRRR!!!!!
Later...

Nubian Indigo 8 -- Consultation Booth (Summer 2002)
Up Close & Personal -- Nappyhood Review!! -- Well people, I actually got a chance to interview some folks on their natural hair & their coiffure of choice. Here are the results along with photos -- YEAH!
| I was able to deliver my advice to the tribe on the go... |
|
| ...Could be the start of something good for Nubian Indigo 8!!
|
|
| Usually wears a relaxed style but she stopped relaxing for the summer. Due to the heat & humidity. What she likes most about wearing this style (natural) is the convenience that it offers. |
|
| Used to wear a low cut fade but started to grow it out about 5 or 6 months ago. Now he wears different styles like an afro (see picture), braids or cornrows. He likes the natural styles on the ladies but has no real preference (natural/relaxed) for someone that he might date. |
|
| Now this young man has been growing his hair out for some time now. He has worn braids, & cornrows but now he has decided to lock his hair. For him braiding started to get tiresome & he didn't want to cut his hair down low -- so he is locking it up (3 weeks in already). This way he can just get up & go. When it comes to the ladies with natural hair, he prefers locks above all other natural coiffure's. He would still date women that are natural without locks & women with relaxed hair as well -- that's still cool. |
|
| This gentleman has a natural low cut/fade hairstyle. He doesn't worry too much about pomades & stuff like that. He likes it to be a bit moisturized (water alone) & lets it roll just like that. He has no desire to lock up or braid his hair, but he does want to grow it out for a blow out style though. To him, it doesn't really matter if his lady has relaxed or natural hair. However, he dates relaxed haired women because they are the majority in his social circle. |
|
| This was fun for me to do & I am hoping that I will be able to add more for every issue of the Indigo Bulletin. |

Experience
| I was on one of the hair boards & one of the sistahs had a MARVELOUS idea. She suggested that a 'network' of sorts get started to tour middle schools & talk with the young women & men about their natural hair. |
|
| An empowerment session that would focus attention to people of color. To inspire & motivate these young folks to embrace themselves & recognize the beauty of their Natural selves. I think that this is a fabulous idea!! |
|
| Like I told the lady that had first suggested this movement -- this is an idea that is simply filled with love for our people. I myself would love to promote this & I let her know that I would definitely be putting it up on the Nubian Indigo 8 website for all to see. |
|
| If you would like to share any of your ideas that this initiative would benefit from... |
|
| ...please do not hesitate to contact me directly so that we may start a conversation on it. |
|
| It may take some time but definitely a realistic goal to shoot for. Sooooooo Exciting!!! You just gotta luv it! |
