This is a Step by Step method for Getting Your WebSite OnLine
following the K.I.S.S. Method
KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid
First you need the program. This Help file is based on WS_FTP , the "lite" version can be downloaded from my site here at FortuneCity. (670KB) After it is installed and running your all set.
Just for funzies, you may want to read the End Users License Agreement.
When you first start, your first Screen will appear like this.
The First Step is to fill out the Session Properties, which is a simple two step process.
Session Properties Step One
General Tab
This information includes your User Name, and the Password you chose when you signed up.
Under Profile Name, you can put anything here you'd like. Following the Kiss method, I would suggest FortuneCity so you can recognize it the next time you sign on. Host Name/Address is just that. This is where your telling the proggie to connect FortuneCity

Session Properties Step Two
Startup Tab
Initial Remote Host Directory, This will be left blank. Our hosts here at FortuneCity have cleverly worked this into your URL, so your files know where there going even if you don't :-)
Initial Local Directory, This is the location on your Hard Drive where you have your Files. I would suggest having them all in one central location so you don't need to search your drive when it's time to upload them. NOTE: This is not a field that must be filled in for FTP to work. You can always change directories after you've signed on. When the necessary fields are filled out "Click" on Apply to save your settings, and your ready to Connect and transfer your files.
NOTE: This is not a True Transfer, Your Only Copying Them to the FortuneCity Server.
With all this completed, your ready to do the actual transfer (copy).
Just "Click" on OK And you'll be connected to the FortuneCity Server.
The Main thing to remember when your transferring your files is the "file type." Your htm/html files will Transfer sing the ASCII setting. Also keep in mind that a number of files can be transferred using the Shift or Control key.
Likewise, your jpg, gif, class, mid and au files will transfer using the "Binary" method.
When your ready to copy your files, just use the arrows between the two windows. You can also copy in either direction, this is good if you later need to back-up your site.
To protect yourself against Acts of God etc, you Do keep a copy of your files on your hard drive or floppy disk, Right?
Keep in mind that all File Names and Extensions ARE cAsE SeNsItIvE. This can be one of the easier ways of loosing your mind when your sure of your spelling etc.
Before you "Close" and "Exit" go and check your site to make sure all your graphics are showing. Check all your Links to other sources be it other pages or whatever. There's Little more Embarrassing then to find Someone Posting in a Forum that half your graphics aren't showing and the Link to your GuestBook actually goes to Yahoo.com
