You obviously want to feed your cat the best.  But are you aware of what goes on behind the scenes?

Many (in fact the majority of) brands of cat food are either DIRECTLY involved with invasive tests on animals, or are owned by companies which do such tests.

IAMS/Eukaneuba and Hill's Science Plan are two of the main culprits.
As reported in the Sunday Mirror 26th January 2002:

Hills Pet Nutrition (Hills scientific and Hills Prescription diets):
-Fed puppies a special diet as part of a 5-week trial.  Their claws, testes and teeth were removed for zinc analysis . "It is believed the dogs then died or were put down"

IAMS company An experiment commissioned by IAMS involved inducing kidney failure in 28 female kittens.  Each then had a kidney removed.  The surgery killed two of the kittens, others suffered weight loss and severe vomiting, then were put down by lethal injection

IAMS (again)  15 beagles had their bowels cut out for analysis before being destroyed.

CRUELTY-FREE PET FOODS
For those who wish to ensure that they feed their pets without cruelty, Naturewatch's list of pet foods (from their "Compassionate Shopper Guide" 8th edition) which are produced by companies with links to animal testing is reproduced below.

"The pet food market is dominated by 4 major companies: Colgate-Palmolive; Mars Inc. (Pedigree); Nestle (Friskies Petcare); and Proctor & Gamble.  These companies have all been involved with animal testing of their pet food products in some way and both Nestle and Proctor & Gamble are the subject of boycotts by animal welfare and other campaigning organisations for their animal-testing policies and other practices"

Naturewatch also list animal-friendly pet food companies.  Not all companies respond to surveys so this should not be considered an exhaustive list.

"Naturewatch is satisfied that the following companies carry out pet food product testing in a way that does not compromise the welfare of the animals used.  We will be researching supermarket own-brand pet foods in the near future; for up-to-date information please contact the Naturewatch office"                (you can click the link at the bottom of this list to contact Naturewatch)
