The Currency Reform in Germany

Part of the Recovery Program for Germany was the Currency Reform, the birthday of our German mark.

On June 20, 1948, every man, woman and child in Germany is issued 40 Deutsche Marks, the country's new currency. The currency reform completes the transition from the worthless Reichsmark to the Deutsche Mark. This date also marks the transition to the social market economy and the beginning of economic growth in post-war Germany.

The currency reform led to the creation of two states on the territory of Germany, the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic.

(These events will be dealt with in detail on a special page.)

Ludwig Erhard, Minister of Economy in the Federal Republic of Germany.

He liberalized the economic system in our country and made the Marshall Plan work effectively.

He became Federal Chancellor in 1963.
