Donkey Fever

I raised horses for many years and always thought, like most people, that donkeys were mean, stubborn, and stupid. Boy was I wrong!

I bought my first donkey quite by accident. It was a sympathy purchase. I was looking for an older broke to death pony for my young son. A gentleman I knew told me he had an older, extremely gentle mule for sale. I went to look.

What I found was a donkey that was mostly blind, deaf and the flies had eaten away most of its leg hair. Every bone in this animals body showed and she had no teeth. I knew this was a very old animal and should probably be put out of its misery but I just told the man "no way" and started to walk away.

That is when the donkey had her say. We had petted her for a few minutes and as we left, she followed us braying loudly for attention. Being an old softy, I decided against my better judgement , to bring her home. I figured I could at least make her last few days more comfortable.

As those of you who have donkeys know, the rest is history. She was the sweetest little animal I could ever hope to meet. She taught me much. I thought I was smart. I thought I knew a lot about horses. Donkeys couldn't be any different. She patiently taught me that I knew absolutely nothing.

She died of old age (the nearest we could put her age after all my searching her background was at LEAST 50 years old). I started searching for a new donkey after we had grieved her loss for awhile. I couldn't find any in our area. I finally adopted two of the wild burros from the BLM. It was the best move I could have made. I now keep a small herd . All are standards with the exception of usually keeping one mammoth for me to ride. I cannot give them all the attention they need and crave if I have as many as I'd like so I keep my herd small. They each get personal time with us and are wonderful pets. They love unconditionally and never turn their back when the chips are down.

I no longer have any horses. I still have a love of all equines but my heart belongs to the donkeys. I sold my horses to make more time for my donkeys. I always enjoy showing them off and talking about them. As this site grows, I hope to be able to share information with others and gather information from others. Having donkeys has taught me that we all have much to learn and the donkeys are the most patient teachers in the world.
