The Bizarre Kazoobees was an informal group of 5 or 6 people who got together to whittle away the long winter nights in Endako, B.C
.
Longest serving members were Peter Ouelette (rhythm guitar, vocals), Denise Ouelette (vocals, percussion), Bob Iwazko (bass, mandolin), Ed Ladeur (lead guitars, bass), John Hansen (banjo, tenor guitar, vocals).
Music styles consisted of old-time (1900-1930), ragtime, folk, bluegrass, country, and fifties rock 'n roll. Only 2 instruments were electrified, the lead guitar and bass. Venues included coffee houses, dances, sports events, summer in-the-park events. Attended by CBC and local radio stations the group became well known from Burns Lake to Quesnel and usually sold out it's performances.
As crazy as it may sound, the group got it's name from its show entrance which (in the beginning) included a march played entirely on kazoo's. Bizarre alluded to the fact that whatever insanity happened by accident was usually incorporated into the act. At one point the show was advertised as a Circus Act. It also had a warm-up act, "Birch Torso", a birch log. It would sit demurely center stage.
When not headlining their own shows the Bizarre Kazoobies opened for other acts such as Ian Tamblyn, Pied Pumpkin/Pied Pear, and the Mulberry Street Jazz Band.
The group disbanded around 1985 after 5 VERY WEIRD years of insanity. Members went on to their own interests. Ed Ladeur moved to Vancouver and became involved in the Carnegie Music Guild Band, which in turn evolved into the Croakers.
