It was a quiet evening in the town of Four Corners as Chris Larabee and Vin Tanner came out of the towns only saloon.
"What a day," Chris said to his friend in a very melancholy voice. " It's been pretty quiet around here these past days, especially without the rest of the guys around.
"Well, if nothings goin' on it must mean we're doin our job." Vin said very matter-of-factly while taking out his harmonica.
"I guess so. I just don't like this feeling of bein' settled in." Chris replied. He found it very easy to talk with Vin. The two of them had hit it off right from the start that day when they came together to save Nathan from the hanging. Chris felt a bond with him that he didn't feel with the others, as did Vin.
Vin taking a break from playing searched for the right words to say. He knew how hard it was for Chris to open and he didn't want to say anything that would spoil the moment.
" Maybe finding Four Corners and taking this job was a way of letting you know it's time to settle down again." Vin came up with.
Chris gave a long sigh. "Sometimes I wonder why I even took this job."
Chris knew the reason though. A reason he wouldn't even confide in Vin ----- Mary Travis. There was just something about her that Chris couldn't say "no" to when she offered him the job, something that reminded him so much of his dead wife. Maybe it was the way her smile seemed so genuine, or the way she stood up for what she believed in. Or maybe it was the way she nagged him and got on his case that reminded him of Sarah. Well, whatever it was, that was part of the reason he stayed. But, he couldn't let the guys know this. They all thought he was so strong and serious, but truth was he was lonely, and he needed someone.
"You alright?" Vin asked.
"Oh...yeah" Chris said dazely."Guess I drifted off for a while. Come on let's go"
The two men walked silently along the boardwalk just enjoying the company
of one another and the peace of the town.
"Man this is great!" JD thought to himself as he held on tight to the reigns of the speeding stagecoach."This is what the west is all about!"
"You doin' alright, kid?" Buck shouted from alongside, turning around to fire another at the four men chasing them.
"Yeah." JD shouted back over the noise of all the guns being fired. "This is what I live for!"
"You best pray, this isn't what you die for!" Ezra yelled from his horse next to the coach. "What in God's name do they want?"
"I don't think it's in God's name that they're chasing us." Josiah yelled to Ezra. "We must have something that they want though." Josiah's voice was barely audible over all the noise.
"Hey guys. Hold up." Nathan stopped his horse and turned around firing one last shot. "They're turning back" he said with a look of relief on his face.
"I truly doubt that is the last we will see of them." Ezra replied coming alongside Nathan. Although he and Nathan didn't hit it off from the start, he considered him a friend now and trusted him just like the others, if not more.
"We'll worry 'bout that when the time comes." Buck answered. "For now let's get these supplies back to Four Corners"
Buck was glad that was over, even though he does enjoy a good fight. Since Vin stayed back in Four Corners, Chris left him in charge and he wanted to prove to his once-close-friend that he could handle the job.
