Elizabeth Potter stepped off the stagecoach and into the glaring sun. Squinting hard, she took a few steps to work the kinks out of her legs from sitting in the cramped coach for almost five hours.
"Here's your bag Miss".
Elizabeth squirmed slightly as she accepted her bag from the stagehand. She was as unaccustomed to being pampered as she was to the very snug dress she was wearing. A faint smile and nod was the only reply she gave him before turning away to survey her surrondings. She wasn't really sure where her Aunt Gloria's store was. It had been years since her family had visited Four Corners, and to be honest, she hadn't paid much attention. But things were different then. She paid closer attention now. Took nothing for granted. She turned away from the stage and started walking, although she wasn't sure where to.
"This is stupid" she thought "Just ask someone". She looked around her trying to find someone to approach when she spotted two men out in front of the Sheriff's office. The younger of the two was sitting in a chair with his feet propped against a post. The other was leaning against the other post, observing the town's activities calmly and quietly while the younger man was rambling on. Squaring her shoulders, she walked towards the two men.
"I'm just saying, why does Buck try and ruin it for me whenever there's a lady around"?
"Excuse me gentlemen" Elizabeth started reluctantly "could you tell me where the Potter's store is"?
Jd, startled out of his ranting, stumbled to his feet. "Um, sure Miss...uh...Miss"? he stammered. Elizabeth looked at him questionaly. " Oh, I'm JD. JD Dunne" he said removing his hat.
ELizabeth smilied faintly, JD's awkwardness was amusing. She offered her hand to JD and said " Elizabeth Potter". JD shook her hand gently then stood back smiling. After a moment Elizabeth Glanced at the other man, then back to JD with a confused look on her face.
"The store" she said "you know where it is"?
"Oh" JD said stepping forward "I'll take you there myself".
Elizabeth took a step back and raised her hand slightly. "Oh that's alright. If you could just tell me I'm sure I'll find it with no problem". JD couldn't hide the look of disappointment. "Oh, uh, sure. You just walk down this way. It's just past the saloon".
Elizabeth smiled at JD. Although it was gaurded, JD didn't notice. He
beamed, believing himself to be a great help.
"Thank you Mr. Dunne for your help." Elizabeth then walked past JD in
the direction he had shown her.
JD watched her go for a moment before turning to Vin.
"I think she liked me, don't you" he asked. Vin just smiled and turned
back to the street. JD was so pleased with himself that he didn't
notice Vin turn to watch Miss Potter as she walked towards the store.
Elizabeth Potter hurried down the walkway towards her Aunt's store. Speaking with the two men had been unsettling. JD's enthusiasim and the other man's quiet stare had been unerving. Niether had done anything wrong, in fact, JD had been very nice, amusing in his eagerness to help. She couldn't help but smile at the thought. But her smile faded as a more distant and painful one intruded upon the happy moment.
"Never again" she thought as she neared the store.
Pushing the painful memories from her mind, she once more squared her shoulders and stepped into the dim interior of the shop. She waited a moment for her eyes to adjust to the change in lighting before spotting her Aunt speaking with another woman at the counter.
"Aunt Gloria"?
The older woman turned to see Elizabeth standing just inside the
doorway.
"Beth" she exclaimed as she rushed to embrace the young woman.
"You're finally here! How was your trip" she asked as she hugged Beth
warmly.
"Fine" Beth replied, returning the embrace just as fiercely. Gloria Potter pulled away to look at her niece. Beth had grown into such a lovely young woman since the last time she had seen her.
"Well, you must be tired! Here, let me take your bag" Gloria said as
she walked Beth towards the counter. The woman her Aunt had been
speaking with was standing there smiling. Gloria moitioned her over.
"Mary, I want you to meet my niece Beth".
Mary Travis took Beth's hand in her own.
"I'm very pleased to meet you Beth" she said. "Gloria has been talking
about you non-stop since she told me you were coming".
Beth smiled at the woman, feeling more at ease now that she was in the
company of women instead of men.
"Well, I'll leave you two to catch up" Mary said as she started to
leave. "I'll see you at the town social tomorrow night".
"Good bye Mary, have a good day" Gloria called to Mary as she left.
"Town social" Beth inquired.
"Yes" replied her Aunt. "Mary believes it will help bring the town
together. Make it a better place to live. She's been printing articles
in the paper everyday urging people to attend. It should be fun!"
"Then I assume you're going" Beth said accusingly. Gloria's expression
softened and sorrow clouded her eyes.
"Beth, dear. What happened to your Uncle was horribleand devastating,
but we can't mourn forever. Life continues, and so must we". The anger
Beth had felt vanished. Her Aunt was right. What had happened was
terrible, in fact that's why she was here, to help her Aunt run the
store. But life did go on. And she would survive, she had before.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Night came to Four Corners in a blaze of orange, red, and yellow. Beth sat on the proch of the Potter's small homestead watching the sky and sipping coffee. She had bathed and changed clothes before supper. She had excused herself to the porch after helping her Aunt clean up. She now sat alone enjoying the quiet beauty of the night.
"Beth" a soft voice called.
"Hmmmm?" she replied, sitting up straighter and turning to Gloria.
"Beautiful night" Gloria said sitting down next to Beth. "So many stars out". Beth looked up and smiled.
"They are beautiful" she replied. Gloria looked at her niece and chuckled.
"You have grown into such a beautiful young lady, but you still refuse to dress like one" she said moitioning to Beth's attire. Beth smiled as she looked at her clothes. No, women didn't wear pants and boots or suspenders. But dresses weren't very convenient when you were helping to run a horse ranch. Besides, dresses were so uncomfortable. And she liked being able to put her feet up.
"Don't worry Aunt gloria, I brought dresses. Mama insisted" she said smiling. Gloria laughed.
"Well good! We can't have you going to the social dressed like a ranch hand". Beth straightened.
"What do you mean" she asked.
"Well, you are going. aren't you" Gloria asked. There was a pleading to her voice Beth could not refuse.
"Of course I will" she replied. Gloria patted her hand.
"Good" she said. "Now that that's settled, I'm going to turn in. Don't stay up too late dear, i want to get an early start tomorrow".
"I won't" Beth said smiling. She kissed her Aunt on the cheek and
watched her go.
When she was alone, a frown came to her face. Thoughts of another
social, long ago, clouded her mind. She shook her head to dispell the
memory.
"No" she thought. "It won't happen again".
Beth stood in front of her Aunt's store watching the activity of the day. People were milling about tending to everyday duties, some with an air of anticipation about the evening's upcoming event. There had been quite a few customers today who had been picking up last minute items for the social.
Beth envied them. She wished this evening was something she could look forward to, even be a little excited about it. But all she felt was a heaviness in her chest, making it hard to concentrate on anything. She wished she could saddle a horse and just ride into the country like she did at home when something was bothering her. There was nothing on earth like the feel of the wind in her face as she galloped across the plain, her hair unbound and flying free behind her. It was completely exhilarating. It was freedom.
Beth opened her eyes and gazed into the street and sighed. It would be some time before she could return to the ranch. She turned to go back inside, and as she did glanced in the direction of the saloon. The man from yesterday, the one who had been with Mr. Dunne, was leaning against a post in front of the saloon looking in her direction. Beth quickly adverted her eyes and hurried into the store.
Gloria had just finished wrapping up a package for a customer. Beth stood back and waited until she finished the exchange and the customer left.
"I finished counting the sacks of flour in the storeroom" she started "and you should probably order some more coffee".
"Thank you dear" Gloria answered. Beth returned Gloria's smile and began putting the inventory sheets into order. When she had finished she crossed the room to the counter where Gloria was working on some papers.
"Aunt Gloria" she began tentitvally, "I was thinking, it's been a long day and...." But before she could finish JD, the young man she had met the day before, came into the store.
JD had been woking up the courage all day to come and see Elizabeth Potter. He had noticed when she and Gloria had arrived that morining to open the store, and had used various excuses to walk past the store many times. When he had met her yesterday, he truly believed she was the prettiest lady he'd ever laid eyes on. More than anything he wanted to ask her to the town social tonight, but couldn't get up the nerve. Finally, after hours of agonizing, he made up his mind to go and ask her. But once inside the store, face to face with Beth, his courage fled.
"Good afternoon Mr. Dunne" Gloria said.
"Good, um, good afternoon ma'am" JD managed to get out. JD stood there shifting his weight from one foot to the other nervously.
"Can I help you find something" Gloria asked.
"Uh.... no ma'am. I just came to get a few things". Jd grabbed a few items from the shelf nearest to him and brought them to the counter. When he placed the items in front of Gloria and Beth, they both glanced at him questionaly.
"Are you sure this is all you need" Gloria asked him. A confused look crossed JD's face.
"I didn't know you smoked" Gloria said.
At that JD looked down at the items he had selected. There was a bottle of Castor oil, a ladies hairbrush, and a pipe. He looked back at the two women. "Well, I thought I might try it" he stammered. Beth couldn't help but smile. Gloria looked at her niece, then back to JD.
"Mr. Dunne, I don't believe you've met my niece. This is Beth. Beth, this is Mr. Dunne".
Beth smiled again. "We've already met" she said.
"Really" Gloria asked surprised.
"Yesterday, outside the Sheriff's office" JD added.
Gloria raised an eyebrow at Beth, which prompted a quick explanation.
"Yes, Mr. Dunne was kind enough to direct me here".
"Oh" Gloria said slightly relieved. There was a awkward silence as JD looked at Beth with a silly little grin. Beth, uneasy with the attention, looked down at her hands. Gloria glanced at JD, then Beth before breaking the silence.
"Will you be attending the social this evening Mr. Dunne" she asked.
JD looked at Gloria.
"Yes Ma'am. My friends and I are are going to make sure there's no trouble".
"I'm sure there won't be" Gloria said glancing in Beth's direction to see her reaction to the comment.
"The town has calmed down quite a bit since you boys have been here" she said quickly.
"I don't know Ma'am, there's still some bad elements around".
"Well, that's not the kind of thing to worry about tonight" Gloria chimed in quickly. She didn't want JD scaring Beth. The rumors about Four Corners alone were bad enough. she didn't want Beth to see there was some truth to them. She wanted Beth to feel safe. The poor girl had been through enough.
"Will you be there" JD asked hesitantly. Beth started to answer, but Gloria cut her off.
"Of course" she said smiling.
"Well then" JD said gathering up his purchases "maybe I'll run into you".
"You and Beth will have to share a dance" Gloria added.
" I'd like that" JD said smiling. Beth's face burned hotly. JD tipped his hat.
"Ladies" he said and backed out the door. Smiling widely, he turned towards the saloon and ran into someone, causing him to drop his packages.
"Hey! Watch where you're goin' JD" Buck said grinning.
"Why don't you" JD fired back embarrassed. He hoped Beth hadn't seen him. He quickly started picking up the items he'd just dropped. Buck bent down to help him and grabbed the bottle of Castor oil before Jd could get to it.
"Well, what do we have here" Buck said holding the bottle up.
"Gimme that" JD yelled grabbing for it. Buck dodged him.
"Castor oil? Feelin' a little under the weather are we"? Buck laughed.
"Give it" JD said grabbing the bottle and making no attempt to hide his anger.
"Whoa there boy! What's got you so hot and bothered" Buck asked stepping around JD and looking into the store. JD stepped in front of him, trying to block his view.
"Nothin' "
"It don't look that way to me" Buck said grinning. He had noticed Gloria and Beth talking at the counter.
"My, my. Now who is that" he asked.
"Nobody" JD said angling around him and blocking his path.
"Come on Buck" JD pleaded. Buck stopped and looked at JD grinning.
"Okay" he said "here, let me help you carry your hairbrush".
JD's face burned bright red. Without a word, he shoved past Buck and hurried towards the saloon, leaving a laughing Buck behind.
Vin Tanner stood outside the saloon leaning against the front post. Where he stood was a good vantage point, for he could see most of the town from there. He had an especially good view of the Potter's store.
He had been on watch in front of the saloon since early morning hoping to see Miss Potter, though why he didn't know, he had only met her briefly. He left his post occasionally, so he didn't draw attention to himself. But what he didn't know was that most of his friends mistook his vigil as just Vin's laid back way of keeping an eye on things. Only Chris suspected there may be more on his mind. But even Chris would not have guessed that it was Elizabeth Potter.
Vin himself couldn't have explained it, even if he chose to recognize it. When it came to women, he was in no way inexperienced. But something about this woman had lit a flame inside of him he thought had been long extinguished.
When he had seen her come out of the store not long ago, he dismissed the lurch in his stomach as too much whiskey the night before. And as he watched her stand there and close her eyes as a look of pain and sorrow washed over her features, his heart beat so rapidly that he had to take a deep breath to slow it down. But the flash of jealousy he felt when JD went into the store then came out flustered and smiling caught him completely off guard.
Vin pushed away from the post with his shoulder and went into the saloon. Ezra was sitting in his usual spot at the head of the poker table counting his winnings. Vin sauntered over and took a seat at the table.
"Care to play a hand my friend" Ezra asked with a sly smile.
"Think I'll pass" Vin answered.
"Well then, would you care to join me in a drink" Ezra replied, motioning to a nearby bottle.
"Now that I can do" Vin said.
Ezra filled two glasses and set one in front of Vin. They raised their glasses to each other, then Vin downed the whiskey in one swallow. Just then Buck came into the saloon laughing, and made his way over to the table.
"And what, may I ask, is so amusing" Ezra asked.
Buck, still chuckling, poured himself a drink.
"JD" he said before taking a swallow.
"What has our young companion done now" Ezra said, shuffling his always present deck of cards.
"Well, it seems he's gone and fallen head over heels for the town's newest little filly" Buck replied.
"Do tell" Ezra said, raising an eyebrow.
"Yep! He's so lovesick it seems he needs some medicinal help" Buck said overtaken with a new fit of laughter. Ezra looked at Vin questionally. Vin pushed away from the table.
"I think I'm gonna get some fresh air, take a ride" he said as he left the shuffling Ezra and laughing Buck. Ezra looked at Buck. Buck just shrugged and took another swallow from his glass, motioning for Ezra to deal him in.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beth examined herself in the mirror in her room. She selfconsciously smoothed down her skirt for the fifth time. There was a soft knocking at the door, then Gloria stepped into the room.
"Are you ready to go" she asked.
"Yes, I suppose" Beth answered still looking in the mirror.
Oh Beth" Gloria said crossing the room "you are a vision in that dress".
Beth looked down at the dress Gloria had given her to wear. It was cream colored with a low neckline edged in lace. Little blue "forget-me-nots" had been embroidered all over. Beth was sure the dress was too fancy to wear to such an event as a town social. But her Aunt had insisted it was perfect and would bring out the blue in her blue/green eyes. She also had mentioned how wonderfully it set off the red highlights in her hair.
Beth had protested when Gloria, after seeing her in the dress, had insisted she keep keep it. But Gloria had argued that with no daughter of her own to pass it on to, it would please her very much if Beth would accept the gift. How could she say no?
"Well, you surely won't be wanting for attention tonight" Gloria said pleased.
Beth winced at the thought. Gloria, not noticing in her eagerness to show off her niece, was busy preparing to leave.
"Well then, let's be off! We don't want to be late now do we"?
Beth forced herself to smile.
"No" she replied simply as her Aunt ushered her out the door.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The town of Four Corners seemed transformed from the virtual den of crime it was known to be . Lanterns hung from every available spot, illuminating the main street in a warm yellow glow. Residents milled about, dancing, talking, and having a wonderful time.
Chris Larabee and Vin stood off to the side watching the festivites. Both seemed content as observers rather than participants. The only reason they had come was to keep an eye out for any problems that might occur. The other men who worked with them had integrated themselves into the activities.
"You really think there's gonna be any trouble" Vin asked Chris.
"You never know" Chris replied solemly. "It's best to be ready for anything".
Buck came over to join the the two men, slightly out of breath. Vin grinned.
"Enjoyin' yerself Buck" he teased. Buck smiled.
"So many women, so little time" he said with a devilish grin. Vin laughed.
"Hey, look at JD" Buck pointed out.
JD was wandering around the edges of the party, obviously searching
for someone.
Buck sighed. "The boy's hopeless. Hey! JD"
he called out.
JD looked over at the three men. Buck motioned for him
to join them.
"Lose somethin' " Buck asked when he joined them. JD gave
Buck a less than nice look.
"What's that smell" Vin said, making a face.
"Why, I think it's JD" Buck said sniffing at him. "Is that cologne" he asked.
"So what if it is" JD countered defensively. Buck laughed.
"What did you do, take a bath in it" Vin asked JD. Buck laughed even harder and even Chris smiled.
"No! I just thought it might be nice for tonight" JD replied. But before JD could say more in his own defense, the person he had been searching for caught his eye.
The other three men looked in the direction JD was staring dumbfounded.
"My, my" Buck breathed. What a beautiful sight to behold".
"If you gentlemen will excuse me" JD said, "Miss Potter has promised me a dance".
Vin, Chris, and Buck watched as JD hurried over to Beth.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beth and Gloria skirted the edge of the dance area, stopping here and there to exchange introductions and small talk. Gloria was proudly showing off Beth, although Beth could have done without the attention. She was talking with her Aunt and Mary Travis when JD approached her.
"Miss Potter"?
Beth turned to find JD standing in front of her a little nervously.
"I was wondering if I could have this dance" he asked.
Beth smiled in spite of herself. There was something about
JD that lessened her fear. She wasn't completely at ease, but she
wasn't as wary of him.
"I'd like that" she said. Beth excused herself from Gloria
and Mary then allowed JD to lead her to the dance area.
"Well would ya look at that" Buck said amazed as he watched JD and Beth dance.
"I think I'm gonna take a walk" Vin said.
He couldn't understand why it bothered him to see JD with Miss
Potter. And he didn't want to understand. In fact, he didn't
want to think about it at all. He didn't care who she danced with
he told himself. But the ache he felt in his chest when he saw her
smile at JD said otherwise.
"You might want to hold that thought Vin" Chris said before he
could leave.
"I think we have trouble".
Three very large, very drunk men pushed their
way through the dancers. Most everyone hurried out of their way,
not wanting to confront such obvious bullies. Those who didn't make
way were either pushed aside or terrorized. The man in the apparent
lead had been groping and dancing roughly with many less than cooperative
women as his friends hassled their escorts.
"Hey boys" he called to his companions "This here's done
wore out" he said about the woman he was manhandling at the moment.
He casually tossed her aside as though she were an empty bottle.
"I done worked up a thirst with that one" he said turning
to his friends.
"Well, how's about a drink" one of his friends said handing
him a bottle. "Hey Edgar" his friend said when he didn't take the
bottle.
"not now" Edgar said pushing the bottle aside" I see a purty
thang over yonder. I thinks I'll git me a dance".
Edgar's friends snickered as they followed him over to where
JD and Beth were dancing.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Shoulda known the night was goin' to well" Buck said as
he watched the head brute head purposely towards JD and Miss Potter.
"Should we let JD handle him" he added.
"Best not to let this get out of hand" Chris answered.
"Think we can get 'em outta here without too much ruckus" Vin asked.
"I don't think they'll be too hard to handle" Chris said with a smile motioning to the way Edgar was swaying.
"Hell, he's so drunk you could hit 'em once and he'd be out till next week" Buck said.
"Let's just get them out of here quick and quietly" Chris said heading towards the dance area.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JD was blissfully unaware of anything around him except the woman in front of him. The fact that she was dancing with him made him the luckiest man alive, at least he thought so. And the happiest. He didn't notice Edgar's approach until it was too late.
"Take a break pup and let a real man take care of business fer a spell" Edgar said. Beth jumped at the sound of the man's harsh voice.
JD didn't even have time to realize what was going on before Edgar shoved him aside and grabbed Beth.
"Hey" JD shouted. But he was again caught by surprise when one of Edgar's friends blindsided him with a hard punch to the jaw, knocking him down.
"I think our friend here told ya to take a break" he said standing over JD. Before JD could respond, he saw three figures move past him to intercept the trio.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It had all happened as fast for Beth. One moment she had been dancing with JD, laughing and talking and genuinely enjoying herself. The next a huge man had a hold of her and was spinning her around crazily. The large man grabbed at Beth roughly. He was laughing and smelled heavily of whiskey. Her mind reeled.
"Not again" her mind screamed in a silent plea.
Before Beth had a chance to react or voice a single sound,
someone else was interrupting.
"Can I cut in" Vin said to Edgar.
Edgar ceased his crazy dance with Beth and looked over his shoulder at Vin.
"This dance ain't over yet" Edgar said and turned back to Beth.
"Oh, I think it is" Vin replied. Beth looked at Vin, the shock and fear plainly visible on her face.
"Git yer own" Edgar said starting his dancing again. Beth was like a rag doll in Edgar's grasp, the fear of what was happening paralyzing her.
"I said I wanna dance with her" Vin said grabbing Edgar by the scruff of the neck and pulling him away from Beth.
"May I have this dance" he said to Beth offering his hand. Edgar, caught off guard, stumbled backwards.
"Hey" he yelled at Vin advancing, but before he could get another word out, Vin brought his elbow up and back fast and hard right into Edgar's face. The pain and surprise combined with the alcohol, put Edgar down and out. Buck caught him as he fell and swiftly dragged him away.
"I think you two had better leave, unless you'd like to join your friend" Chris said facing the other two men. They quickly turned and retreated, not wanting to suffer the same fate as Edgar.
Beth stood dumbfounded, staring at Vin's outstreatched hand.
"Ma'am" He said to her.
Beth, still in shock and at a loss for action, placed her
hand in Vin's and followed his lead as he started dancing.
"You okay?" Chris said to JD, helping him up. JD rubbed his jaw.
"Yeah, fine" he said a little stunned.
"I think you could use that break now" Chris said with a smile as he lead the stunned JD away from the dancers.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beth moved with Vin as if she were in a trance.
"Are you okay Miss" Vin asked a little hesitantly. The sound of his voice snapped Beth back to reality.
"What" she said a little confused and surprised to see Vin instead of Edgar.
"Are you okay" Vin repeated gently. Beth looked up and into the bluest pair of eyes she had ever seen. There was concern in those eyes, and something deeper.
"Oh,...yes. I...I'm fine" she said, flustered. "Where's JD" she asked concerned.
"Oh, he's takin' a breather" Vin said with a smile.
Beth felt something move inside of her.
Just then the music came to an end. Beth stood there
feeling awkward, still in Vin's embrace. There was something in
the way he looked at her, something in those beautiful eyes. Her
mind screamed at her to run, but her feet remained rooted to that spot.
"Beth" Gloria gasped coming to her side. Vin released Beth from his arms into Gloria's. He stood there silently and watched as Gloria fawned over her niece.
"Are you alright?" she said worried. Beth tore her eyes from Vin and looked at Gloria.
"Yes I suppose. A little shaken though" she said.
"Oh thank goodness" Gloria said relieved. "When I saw what was happening, I tried to get to you, but" Beth put up her hand to stop her Aunt's babbling.
"It's alright Aunt Gloria. This gentleman here was kind enough to rescue me" she said motioning to Vin. Gloria turned to Vin with a look of graditude.
"Oh thank you, thank you so much. When I saw that man grab Beth I didn't know what to do. Thank goodness you were here to help her before something horrible happened". Beth winced at the last part.
Vin nodded to Gloria.
"Glad I could be of service" he said. He tipped his hat to Beth and Gloria. "Ladies" he said and turned to go.
"Wait" Beth said quickly. Vin turned back to her.
"I...I just wanted to thank you for the dance, Mr.....?"
"Tanner" Vin replied "Vin Tanner".
"Thank you Mr. Tanner" Beth said.
"Come on dear" Gloria said to Beth leading her away.
"Don't mention it" Vin said under his breath as he watched the two women go.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beth sat on the edge of her bed brushing her hair. Even though she was completely exhausted, and wanted nothing more than to sleep, images from the evening tumbled through her mind. She was still a little confused about how everything had happened. It had all been so quick. One moment she was dancing with JD, actually enjoying herself. The next she was in the arms of an old nightmare of groping hands and harsh words. But unlike before, someone had saved her. Someone who had held the nightmare at bay as he rocked her gently in time with the music. Someone who had piercing blue eyes.
A gentle knock on the door pulled Beth from her thoughts.
"I just wanted to make sure you were okay" Gloria said poking her head into the room. Beth sighed. It was about the one hundredth time Gloria had asked her that since bringing her home.
"I'm fine" she assured her aunt. She was actually still quite shaken, but she didn't want Gloria worring about her.
"Well, I think it would be a good idea for you to stay home and take it easy tomorrow" Gloria said.
Beth considered arguing the issue, but decided against it. She wasn't in any real hurry to return to town.
"Will you be alright alone?" Beth asked.
"Oh of course, don't you worry about me. You just get some rest" Gloria said.
"Okay" Beth replied simply not wanting to talk anymore.
"Well, now that that's settled, you get some sleep dear" Gloria said smiling as she left. "Good night dear".
"Good night" Beth called back.
After she was alone, Beth stood and turned down the bed.
She placed her brush on the bedside table and blew out the lamp. As
she crawled into bed, she couldn't help thinking about what had happened
again. But as she drifted into sleep only one image persisted.
An image of blue eyes.
Vin rode loosely in his saddle, letting his horse go where it wanted. He too was playing the night's events over in his mind. After stopping Edgar and his friends, he had watched disappointed as Gloria hurried Beth away.
For some strange reason he had an urge to follow. There had been more to the pain and fear in her eyes than Edgar's drunken intrusion. Something deep rooted and terrifying. That look had touched his heart, something no other woman had managed to do, except once before. Vin shook his head. He refused to relive that memory.
Vin had found out a long time ago what a woman could do to your soul. It was not something he cared to go through again. He had run from it once, but could he do it again? The circumstances were different from what they had been then. There were people depending on him now, not to mention the six men who counted on him for back-up if they needed it. Life had been so much easier on the plains, he mused.
A change in his mount's gait brought him out of the past and back to the present. They were nearing the edge of town, and the horse, sensing home nearby, had picked up its pace. Vin urged the animal to move faster, turning in the direction of the livery where he stabled the horse at night.
He spent some extra time brushing down the animal, the chore relaxing him and taking his mind off his conflicting thoughts and emotions. When he was satisfied the horse was comfortably bedded down for the night, he headed for the saloon. Vin considered stopping by the jailhouse to check on the passed out Edgar, but changed his mind, cofident that the situation was under control. He then thought about going to see JD, see if he was alright. He was also curious as to whether he had spoken to Miss Potter before she had left. He dismissed the idea, he didn't want to know. He decided he needed a drink instead.
Vin entered the saloon and immediatly noticed Chris sitting at a table off to the side. He crossed the room to join the other man. He pulled out a chair and eased himself down. With a sigh, he leaned back and stretched his legs out in front of him.
"Drink?" Chris asked.
Vin gave a slight nod as he removed his hat. Chris poured him a glass and slid it across the table. Vin caught the glass, lifted it to his lips, and took a drink.
"How's JD" Vin asked setting the drink down.
"His pride's hurt worse than he is" Chris said smiling. Vin gave another small nod.
"That's good to hear" he said downing the whiskey. He leaned across the table and set the glass in front of Chris, motioning for another. Chris obliged him.
The two men shared a comfortable silence as they sat there, each caught up
in their own thoughts. Chris glanced at Vin and wondered what his friend was thinking. He knew something was bothering Vin, but he didn't want to intrude on his privacy. If Chris valued anything most, it was privacy.
But he couldn't help noticing the way Vin had stared after Miss Potter as her Aunt hurried her home from the social. He hadn't missed JD's reaction to seeing Vin and Miss Potter together either. But he wouldn't ask either about it. They would have to work it out on their own. He would only intercede if the need arose. But for now, Chris was content with the bottle of whiskey in front of him, and good company beside him.

Beth stepped out into the bright, warm morning. She was dressed in her preferred clothing, pants. It was what she usually wore around the homestead, only wearing dresses into town. She did however have a new addition to the outfit.
A gunbelt complete with a Colt .45 slung at her hip. It was a little powerful for a small woman such as herself, but power is what she wanted. Power to kill if need be. Gloria didn't know about the weapon, Beth hadn't told her she had brought it. Although she was almost never without it, she had kept it hidden from her Aunt and hadn't unpacked it until that morning. After deciding to go for a ride that day to clear her head, nothing could have made her leave her sidearm behind after last night.
Beth had packed a few supplies to take along, planning to be out most of the day. She saddled the horse left behind by Gloria and secured her provisions. She mounted and headed out in no particular direction. She had no specific route in mind, she only wanted to race across the plains and let the wind wipe her mind clean.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vin walked down the boardwalk towards the Sheriff's office. He had just come from the hotel after having a light breakfast and thought he'd stop by the jail and see JD, something he had avoided last night. He didn't understand why this made him uneasy. He had tried to ignore the feeling he had about JD and Miss Potter's association, but it bothered him no matter how hard he tried to deny it. He stopped outside the office, reconsidering for a moment. But he decided it was better to deal with this now, and not let it go any further.
As Vin entered the office he saw JD sitting behind the desk fiddling with his pistol.
"How's the jaw" Vin asked, noticing the bruise that had developed.
"What's it to you" JD replied, glancing up only long enough to give Vin an unpleasant look. Vin stood there, unsure of how to respond. When he didn't answer, JD looked at him.
"So tell me Vin" JD said setting his gun down, his voice thick with anger "did you enjoy your dance with Beth? It sure looked that way to me".
"What are you talkin' about JD" Vin said calmly "I was just helping out".
"Really, well you sure could've fooled me" JD said, fixing Vin with an angry stare. "You sure were in a big hurry to step in for me last night" he added.
" I haven't got the slightest idea what..." Vin started before JD cut him off.
"You know damn good and well what I'm talkin' about, so don't try and deny it" JD shouted jumping to his feet. Vin took a step back, not in fear, but in anticipation of a possible attack. Vin could feel his anger rising. He knew if he didn't get out of there he would do something he'd regret later. He turned to go.
"Hey! I'm not finished " JD called out as he grabbed the sleeve of Vin's coat. Vin turned fast as lightning, slapping JD's hand away. The two men stood glaring at each other, the tension hanging heavy in the air between them.
"Are you gonna stand there and tell me you don't have feelings..."
"Don't" Vin said through clenched teeth cutting JD off. Vin and JD glared at each other. Vin decided he had had enough. He turned from JD and quickly exited the building.
JD watched as Vin stalked away towards the stables. His anger churned inside of him. He slammed the door and returned to the desk and resumed fiddling with his gun. It was bad enough to have Buck horning in on all of his female interest, but now he had Vin doing it too.
JD had been greatful at first when Vin and the others had interceded last night. But his feelings of thanks faded when he had seen the way Vin looked at Beth and how tenderly he held her as they danced.
From the day Beth Potter had approached JD in front of the Sheriff's office, he had been drawn to her. Iit was more than
the fact she was beautiful that had caught his attention. It was the way she carried herself. There was a wildness in her born of the frontier.
But there was also a frailness behind her stoic demeanor. A timid fawn to be cared for and loved. More than anything Jd wanted that honor. But he didn't think it was possible, until she had agreed to dance with him. She had been sweet and charming, genuinely interested in what he said. From that moment JD had seen Beth as a rare and beautiful wild flower to be loved and cherished and held close to his heart. The thought of losing her caused his throat to constrict painfully. JD placed his sidearm on the desktop, buried his face in his hands, and shook his head miserably.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beth's face was flushed with exhileration as she raced her horse across the plain toward a small valley. The wind sang in her ears as the air sped by, catching her hair and whipping it wildly behind her.
She had been plagued throughout the night and most of the day with memories of the last night's commotion, leaving her emotionally as well as physically exhausted. Beth could feel her mount's labored breathing and realized she was pushing the animal too hard. She slowed, and brought the horse to a trot before stopping. She dismounted and lead the mare on foot the rest of the way to the small creek. Beth let the mare drink her fill then removed her small bundle and tethered the horse nearby a large oak.
With her mount resting comfortably, Beth spread out the small blanket she brought under the tree and unwrapped her small lunch. As she leaned back against the oak, she gazed up at the sky. Large white clouds floated lazily across the sky, making the already tired woman very drowsy. She stiffled a yawn as she blinked hard trying to dispel her sleepiness.
She had slept fitfully throughout the night, waking many times drenched in sweat, fear causing her to search the darkness franticly. She had awakened that morning unrested with an overwhelming feeling of claustrophobia. She yearned to be outdoors, free of the pain and anxiety she held in her heart.
But the beauty of the countryside offered no comfort or escape today. Beth had urged the horse into a dead run in an attempt to leave the unpleasant thoughts behind. She had succeeded for awhile as they were replaced with happier ones of home and the rides she took back there. But now, as she lay there in the cool shade drifting off, the terrible nightmare returned to claim her.....
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beth was out in the barn checking on a mare who had just foaled. Her parents were in town at a meeting to discuss the possible whereabouts of Brian Crane, a young man who had fled the area after a failed attempt to steal the Potter's ranch through Beth.
As Beth tended to the mother and baby, bitter thoughts of Brian ran through her mind. He had come a few months back looking for work. Her father had hired him on as a ranchhand. Beth had been attracted to him immediately, his charm quickly winning her and her family over.
A whirlwind courtship had begun, and before she knew it, Beth was engaged to be married to Brian. She had been happier than she could remember. But her joy was short lived as word came to the Potter's of Brian's true nature and intentions. He was a mean and ruthless conman looking to rob the Potter's of their land by marrying their daughter and only heir. But before he could be brought to justice for crimes commited in other territories, he had disappeared.
Beth was heartbroken and humiliated. The man she had loved with all her heart had wanted her for nothing more than her inheritance.
A sound behind her caused Beth to cease her actions. She turned and searched the shadows.
"Hello?" she called. Silence was all that answered. Beth chided herself for her foolishness and returned to the horses. A sudden movement in the darkness to her left caught her attention. Fear seized Beth as she spun around, searching frantically.
"Hello Beth" a voice growled. Beth backed against the wall of the horse's stall.
"Who's there" she called trying to keep the fear from her voice. Brian Crane stepped from the shadows, an evil grin distorting his features.
"Brian" she gasped surprised.
"What? You think I'd run off without gettin' a goodbye kiss" he sneered. Beth's terror grew by the minute. She searched frantically for something to defend herself with. A pitchfork was leaning in the corner of the stall. If only she could get to it fast enough. Brian followed her gaze, then smiled.
"Now just what are you thinkin' of doin'" he said advancing "nothin' stupid I hope".
Beth lunged for the pitchfork, but before she was even close, she felt a searing pain as Brian grabbed a handful of her hair and yanked her backwards.
"I thought you were smarter than that Beth" he said turning her to face him. Beth fought against his hold on her. Brian laughed as he caught one flailing arm and easily twisted it behind her back.
Beth whimpered as the pain shot up her arm. She lashed out before Brian could restrain her free arm, raking her nails down the left side of his face. Her nails bit into the soft flesh, carving a path from his eye to his chin. The attack infuriated him. He backhanded Beth hard, sending her tumbling to the ground. She scrambled to her feet, ignoring the pain, trying desperately to escape. Brian was upon her quick as lightning. He pulled her roughly to her feet. Beth tried to scream, but the sound was cut short as a hard fist clamped tightly around her throat.
"Ain't no use in screamin' sugar, ain't no one around for miles" he said right before he slammed her face first into one of the barn's support posts. Pain flashed brightly behind Beth's closed eyes then she crumpled to the ground, barely conscious. Brian yanked her upright again.
"Think you're gettin' off that easy" he snarled then backhanded her again, hard, splitting her lip. Beth lay on the ground at Brian's feet sobbing, begging him to stop. Brian just glared at her crumbled form before kicking her vicously. Beth cried out as his foot connected again and again. She rolled a few feet, then lay there struggling to hold on to conciousness.
Brian stalked over to where Beth lay in agony. He stood over her menacingly. Beth made a feeble attempt at escape, but found she could barely move. Her body screamed its rebellion. But as she forced herself to her knees, Brian was once again upon her. He grabbed her by the back of her hair and yanked her head backwards.
"You think you're so high and mighty" he said through gritted teeth. "But I know know you're nothin' but a whore". He pushed her face down into the hard ground as he savagely ripped her skirt aside.
One thought echoed through Beth's mind. "Oh god no! Don't let this be happening!"
Beth let out an agonized scream.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vin rode hard trying desperately to leave all the confusing thoughts and emotions behind. But it was useless. No matter how far he rode, it would all be there, waiting to ambush him when he returned.
He played the tense moment in the Sherriff's office with JD over in his mind. It infuriated him that JD had suggested he was trying to steal Miss Potter away from him. It infuriated him even more to have the kid tell him what his feelings were. He was having enough trouble acknowledging his attraction to Miss Potter alone without having a mere boy like JD point it out to him. Hell, even challange him over it. Vin shook his head.
"Damn" he muttered. It was too unnerving for him, a man accustomed to being emotionally detached from situations, to face. But he realized it wasn't entirely JD he was angry with, but himself too. He had promised himself he wouldn't let this happen again after the last time. But here he was, faced with a traitorous heart.
For the first time in many years, Vin allowed himself to think of a woman he had known long ago. It pained him to remember her, and their parting. He didn't want to relive that moment ever again. And in his line of work, not to mention a 500 dollar bounty hanging over his head, there could be nothing but farewells. He had decided then love was a luxury he couldn't afford.
A cold gust of wind snapped Vin from his thoughts. Angry thunderheads filled the sky.
"Sloppy" Vin thought reprimanding himself for allowing the storm to sneak up on him. Inattention could get you killed in this territory.
Vin took his bearings. He was close to the small valley a few miles outside of town. He knew he'd never make it back before the storm dumped its heavy load on him. He decided to make a run for it anyway. He turned his horse to start back when a strange sound stopped him in his tracks. A woman's terrified scream. He quickly turned back in the direction of the valley.
"Ha!" he shouted, spurring his horse into motion.
Whatever was going on in the valley wasn't good.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beth snapped upright, groping for her gun, caught in the grip of a violent flashback. She was reliving the nightmare as she scrambled on the ground trying to escape an invisible attacker. The sound of hoofbeats barely registered in her terrified mind.
As Vin approached the site of the commotion he searched for attackers but only found a single person seemingly having a fit. He quickly scanned the area again, making sure they were truly alone before dismounting. He cautiously approached the screaming woman.
"Ma'am" Vin called out to the frantic Beth.
Beth's head snapped around in the direction that Vin had called from.
Just then a heavy downpour began, distorting Beth's vision even more. Vin took a few more steps towards Beth. His eyes widened in surprise.
"Miss Potter" he asked confused. He looked at the woman's terrified face a moment before realizing she wasn't in the present. Beth squinted through the rain at Vin.
"Who's there" she called out in a shaky voice.
"Vin Tanner" he called back to her coming closer.
Beth saw Vin coming at her through the driving rain. But as he got closer, it wasn't Vin she saw, it was Brian Crane.
She screamed and drew her weapon, still caught in the flashback.
"Stay away from me" she screamed pointing the gun at Vin's chest.
Vin stood completely still trying to appear unthreatening. Something was very wrong here and if he wasn't careful he'd end up with a .45 caliber slug in his chest. Beth slowly got to her feet shaking slightly. She kept the gun trained steadily on Vin.
"Why did you come back" she screamed "haven't you done enough!"
Vin raised his hands, showing he was unarmed and took a tentitive step toward Beth.
"Stop!" Beth screamed. Vin froze.
"Put down the gun Miss Potter" he said calmly. "I'm not gonna hurt you, I came to help."
"Is this what you call help" Beth shouted back. "I'll make you pay for this Brian" she said through clenched teeth anger burning bright in her eyes.
"Brian?" Vin thought.
"You'll never hurt me again" Beth added pulling back the Colt's hammer. Vin realized what Beth intended to do. She obviously thought he was someone else. He had to do something quick.
"Miss Potter, it's me, Vin Tanner, remember? We met at the town social last night" he said easing a little closer to where Beth stood her ground. A confused look crossed Beth's face. She shook her head violently.
"No....NO! You won't get away with it this time" she said fighting against Vin's words and the turmoil in her mind.
"This isn't working" Vin thought. He decided to try a different approach, a gentler one.
"Beth" he said softly "It's Vin, not Brian". Beth shook her head again, trying to block out Vin's voice.
"Stop it! Stop saying that" she screamed. Vin took another step forward.
"Beth...look at me. I'm not Brian....I'm Vin" he continued gently.
Beth screamed and covered her ears to block him out. Vin, seizing the opportunity, rushed forward and quickly disarmed her. He tossed the gun aside, well out of reach. Beth fought against Vin, screaming and swinging wildly at him. Vin dodged the blows easily and grabbed her from behind. He pinned her arms to her chest, trying to calm her. Beth fought violently, trying to escape Vin's embrace. She threw her head backwards, hitting Vin in the face. His mouth filled with blood as his teeth stabbed through his lower lip. Vin spit the blood out and pulled Beth tightly against his chest, making struggling more difficult.
"Shhh..." he said rocking her gently. "It's alright, it's alright....." he said trying to soothe the terrified woman. Beth started to sob uncontrollably, shuddering violently as the flashback began to fade. Vin continued to rock her back and forth, holding her to him fiercely.
"Shhh..." he continued " no one's gonna hurt you now....I'm here....I'm here". The rain fell upon them heavily as Vin continued to comfort Beth. Her struggles had ceased, as she allowed Vin to hold her.
"We're gonna catch our death out here" Vin said to her. "Come on, let's get you somewhere warm and dry". Beth didn't respond. She had gone completely limp in his arms. Vin gently turned her to face him. Beth's eyes were glazed over with a far away look and her face was completely blank.
"Beth" Vin said shaking her slightly. She was unresponsive. Realization dawned on Vin, she was in shock from the trauma of reliving her ordeal. Vin had no clue what could have happened to her to cause this kind of reaction, but he had an idea.
Beth started to shiver violently as the cold rain soaked through her clothing. Vin knew he had to get Beth to town and soon. Quickly he stripped off his coat and tenderly wrapped Beth in it. He gathered her in his arms and carried her to where his horse stood. Carefully, and a bit awkwardly, he mounted. He found a comfortable position with Beth cradled in front of him. There was no time to collect her horse and belongings, he'd have to send someone later. He eased his horse into motion, holding onto Beth's lifeless form for dear life. The jolt of the horse's movement caused Beth to whimper, but she didn't awaken from her trance. Instead, she stared blankly off into the distance, completely unaware of anything happening to her.
Vin was completely at a loss. He had no idea how to deal with this situation. The best he could do was get Beth to Nathan and hope to god he could do something.
Vin watched the ground carefully as he rode. The hard rain was turning the ground treacherous quickly. If he wasn't careful, he could lame his horse making the trek back even more difficult. He chanced a quick look at Beth, checking on her condition. Her eyes had fallen shut as she continued to shiver. Vin knew this was a bad sign. He himself was starting to feel very chilled. The hand that held the horse's reins had become numb from the icy rain. But he wasn't suffering from shock as well as exposure. Beth was. He decided he would have to risk the danger of a mishap. Clutching Beth to him even tighter, trying to give her what little body warmth he had, he spurred the horse on toward town.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chris and Buck stood in front of the saloon watching the falling rain.
"Came up fast" Chris commented.
"Yup" Buck agreed. Buck was somber. He was concerned about the earlier altercation between Vin and JD. He had gone to see JD that morning, not long after Vin had left. He had listened as JD had poured his heart out about Beth and his fear of losing her to Vin. Buck felt for the kid. He had tried his best to ease JD's fears and heartache, but he knew he wasn't much help.
The two of them had then gone to the saloon where Buck had watched as JD downed shot after shot until he finally just sat there clutching the bottle to himself. Chris had come in then and motioned for Buck to join him out front. Buck had an idea of what Chris was thinking. It hadn't taken long for the news of Vin and JD's little tiff to spread through the ranks of their small group.
Now as Buck stood there waiting for Chris to speak his mind, he wondered what kind of effect this situation would have on the group.
"I guess you've heard about what's goin' on between Vin and JD" Chris started. Buck acknowledged the statement with a nod.
"It's a bad thing to have bad blood with someone who's supposed to be backin' you up" Chris continued. As Buck started to reply, JD stumbled out of the saloon.
"Wanna dringk" JD slurred to Chris. Chris eyed the swaying JD.
"I think you've had enough for all of us" he said.
"Hell...I'm jist gettin' starded" JD said taking another drink from the bottle he held. He emptied it then tossed it aside.
"Come on...I'm byin'" JD said to Buck and Chris.
Buck and Chris looked at each other knowingly.
"Maybe you should lie down for awhile" Buck said taking JD by the arm. Chris turned from the two men. He knew Buck would handle JD. It was Vin he was worried about.
Something moving through the rain caught Chris' attention. He squinted at what appeared to be a rider coming in. His eyes widened with recognition.
"Hey Buck" Chris called over his shoulder. Buck left JD and came over to see what had his friend worried.
"You may want to get JD outta here a little faster" Chris said. Buck looked in the direction Chris had indicated. He saw Vin riding up fast, Beth Potter cradled in his arms in front of him. She looked unconscious. Buck quickly turned to herd JD into the saloon, but Vin called out before he could reach him.
"Get Nathan" Vin called as he spotted Chris. JD spun around unsteadily at the sound of Vin's voice. He stepped up to the edge of the boardwalk as Vin brought his horse to a halt in front of the saloon. He watched dumbfounded as Chris hurried to take Beth's lifeless form from Vin.
"Beth?" JD said. It was hardly more than a whisper. He moved to her side quickly. The sight of Beth's pale face caused JD's heart to stop. Chris moved away quickly in the direction of the room where Nathan lived.
"Beth!" JD called out trying to follow. Buck stopped him.
"Let Chris get her to Nathan" he said gently trying to calm the frantic JD.
JD didn't hear Buck. He only heard the pounding of his own heart as he watched Chris take Beth away. His anger rose, quickly turning into blind fury. He turned and rushed at Vin.
"What did you do to her you bastard" he screamed as he slammed into Vin with all of his stregth. Vin, caught off guard, was knocked off the boardwalk into the rain and mud landing on his back. JD stood on the boardwalk staring down at Vin panting.
"If you even touched her" he threatened.
Vin's shock quickly turned to anger as he stood. He launched himself at JD, grabbing him by the collar and slammed him into the wall of the saloon.
"You'll do what BOY" Vin said, his face inches from JD's. Rage flashed in both men's eyes. Buck was quick to react.
"let him go Vin" he said grabbing Vin's arm. Vin released his hold on JD and yanked his arm away from Buck. He gave JD a hard look before turning to follow Chris. JD started to pursue, but Buck again stopped him.
"What are you doin'" Buck asked pulling JD back.
"I'm gonna go see Beth" JD said trying to pull away "I gotta see if she's alright" he added his panic returning.
"Later" Buck said. "Right now we should go get her Aunt and you need to calm down and cool off ". Buck pulled JD with him toward the newspaper office. He thought it might be a better idea for Mrs. Travis to tell Mrs. Potter about her niece. He didn't want JD to upset the woman more than she would be, plus he wanted to get JD sobered up before he started another brawl with Vin.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vin entered Nathan's room without knocking, his fear and concern for Beth overcoming all his manners.
"How is she" he asked not waiting to be acknowledged.
"We need to get her outta these wet clothes" Nathan said removing her boots. Vin froze.
"I'll get Josiah to help" he said turning to go.
"We ain't got time for that" Nathan said "We gotta get her warm and dry fast".
Vin looked at Chris.
"I'll get Josiah, you help Nathan" Chris said heading for the door. Vin tried to say something to stop him but Chris was already opening the door.
"Vin" Nathan called over his shoulder "give me a hand here".
Vin turned back to Nathan and Beth. His feet were rooted to the floor.
"Come on Vin" Nathan called again impatiently as he struggled to hold Beth up. Vin moved over to Nathan and stood there nervously. Nathan already had Beth's shirt untucked and was working on getting her pants off. Vin caught a glimpse off bare flesh and quickly adverted his eyes.
"Here, hold her up while I get her shirt now" Nathan instructed. Vin awkwardly placed his hands under Beth's arms, holding her steady while Nathan quickly stripped off the rest of her soaking clothes. Nathan was nothing but professional as he worked, concerned over Beth's health. Vin was trying hard not to notice anything but the rain beating against the window next to the bed.
Once Nathan had Beth undressed, he covered her with a warm and dry blanket. Vin breathed a sigh of relief and stepped back. Nathan turned to him.
"What happened" he asked.
"I don't know" Vin replied. "I came across her in the valley. She was screamin' and rollin' around like she was being attacked. When I tried to help, she drew on me and started callin' me Brian". Nathan looked thoughtful for a moment before speaking.
"I've heard about this kind of thing before" he said. "What else happened".
"Nothin' really. I got the gun away from her and tried to find out what happened but she just went kinda limp and started starin' off into nowhere. Kinda like she went into shock" Vin answered.
"That's it exactly" Nathan said. "Sometimes when somethin' bad happens to a person, they can sort of 'relive' it.....get trapped in the memory". Vin looked at Beth's still form
"It musta been pretty bad to make her go into shock like that" Nathan added.
"Yeah" Vin said softly.
Beth started to mumble and toss slightly. Nathan moved over to the bed and placed a hand to her cheek.
"What is it" Vin asked worried.
"Fever" Nathan replied wrapping the blanket tightly around Beth.
"We gotta keep it down" he said getting another cover for her. "Her body can't fight it off in this condition". Nathan stood and looked at Vin seriously.
"This could get bad. We best send for her Aunt" he said.
Vin nodded in agreement. He looked at Beth again. Her shivering had returned and her face was even paler than before. A fine sheen of sweat had formed on her brow. Vin didn't want to leave her, but he knew Nathan would be more help if her condition worsened. He was the obvious choice to go and fetch Mrs. Potter. Vin turned to go.
"Hold up there" Nathan said turning Vin back to face him. "Let me see that lip". Vin touched his swollen lower lip. He had forgotten about it in his worry over Beth.
"It's nothin'" he said.
"Just let me see" Nathan insisted. Vin stood patiently and allowed Nathan to examine him.
"Looks like you cut it pretty good" he said. "How'd this happen?" Vin didn't answer but looked at Beth. Nathan noticed the look that passed over his face.
"Oh" was his response.
"I best get goin'" Vin said not wanting to explain. He grabbed his coat from where Nathan had tossed it when chris brought Beth in and turned to go.
Just then Josiah and Chris entered the small room. Josiah went to Nathan and the two of them began speaking in hushed voices. Chris approached Vin.
"Buck had Mrs. Travis go and get Mrs. Potter" he said. Vin let out a relieved sigh. He wouldn't have to leave Beth. He watched as Josiah sat down next to Beth and silently closed his eyes in prayer.
A cold shot of fear ran through Vin as he saw the look on Nathan's face. Beth was getting worse by the minute. Vin felt his world spin completely out of control as he stood by helplessly. A single thought echoed through his mind.
"Please god...don't let me lose her........"
