BIOGRAPHY
BEST known of the four acting Baldwin brothers (William, Stephen, and Daniel are similarly rough-hewn), Alec is the one who dyes his hair black. Appearing first on TV in dramas and soap operas (The Doctors) and in serious plays on the New York stage, he hit the silver screen in 1987 in Forever Lulu. In the Hunt for Red October, Baldwin played his first dashing leading-man role. Stolidly handsome, he makes a versatile actor—equally smooth as a romantic hero (Prelude to a Kiss), as a psychopathic bastard (Malice, The Juror), or as a doomed Shakespearean character (Looking for Richard)—but his 1992 Broadway rendition of Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire didn't turn him into Brando. He did, however, score a Best Actor Emmy nomination for his Stanley in the TV miniseries Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire. In late 1996, Baldwin appeared in court as the district attorney who prosecutes Byron De La Beckwith, the man accused of shooting civil rights leader Medgar Evers, in Ghosts of Mississippi; in 1997, he battled the elements, Anthony Hopkins, and a bear named Bart in the David Mamet-scripted film The Edge; and 1998 witnessed his solid performance as a government superspook determined to prevent a multibillion-dollar national security code from being compromised in the thriller Mercury Rising.

Baldwin jilted Janine Turner (Northern Exposure) just shy of the altar, and then married Kim Basinger, with whom he made the 1991 picture The Marrying Man. Baldwin transitioned smoothly into fatherhood when he was booked with assault after allegedly punching a photographer who attempted to take a picture of their newborn daughter Ireland (he was acquitted). Things should get even more interesting when she starts dating.
