K & A Interview with Jerry O`Connell and Sabrina Lloyd
by Kathy Krantz
This is a thrilling season for Sliders fans. That unique, well-written and intelligent sci-fi series is renewed thanks to faithful fans who pushed the revival of thier best loved TV show. How could they go on, not seeing a new Sliders episode ever again? The thought of an existence in a world without Sliders was unfathomable to them. Now, we get to see more adventures with the four who got caught up in a time-sliding escapade, slipping and wandering into parallel Earths together. The show has four main characters: Jerry O`Connell as the handsome physics grad student Quinn Mallory; John Rhys-Davies as the brilliant but arrogant physics professor Maximillian Arturo; Sabrina Lloyd as the beautiful computer tech Wade Wells; and Cleavant Derricks as the former R&B singer Rambrandt "Crying Man" Brown.
Sliders was created by Tracy Torme (interviewed in The Trekker issues Vol. 5 No. 4 and 5) and Robert K. Weiss.
The following interviews are with the two who have chemistry for each other! You might notice some of the questions are the same for both Sabrina and Jerry. This was intentional, so we may see if they are compatible, if they think along the same lines and generally for fans to see how they each think about the same topic or subject. Both are young actors, both have a lot of past experience in film, theater and TV series. What drives each and why are they so magnetically attracted on the show? They give us a glimpse at their real life, why and how they got their Sliders part, how they feel about each other`s character on and off screen and what their future aspirations are. We might see some similarities, some big differences and some unique ways these two actros are.
Sabrina Lloyd knew at the age of twelve she wanted to be an actress. She started with community theater in Annie, Grease, Crimes of the Heart and Wizard of Oz. Her first film appearance was in Chain of Desire (1992), and she was in Father Hood (1993) with Patrick Swayze. TV credits include guest starring in the Law and Order series, the TV movies The Coming Out of Heidi Leiter and Off Limits.
Sabrina`s love for acting and spunky, excitable charm is seen on the screen. She displays an innocence and wonder in the character of Wade, and when we watch her go through each parallel world we see a woman who can handle adventure, good or bad. Not always if the woman in film going to be portrayed as a helpless, "Oh, save me from harm," image. Thanks to Sabrina`s strong, spirited performance, we can now look to this Earth to be one where women are given the same opportunities as men. Sabrina handles this on and off screen, as she is a contemporary woman of the future.
Jerry O`Connell appeared in numerous TV commercials at the age of eleven. He co-starred in the hit film Stand By Me (1986) directed by Rob Reiner. TV credits include My Secret Identity, Camp Wilder and Olie Hopnoodle`s Haven of Bliss and the PBS/Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation of The Room Upstairs. He also starred in the TV movies The Ranger, The Cook and the Hole in the Sky, and the feature film Calendar Girl (1993) opposite Jason Priestly.
He is a native New Yorker, and a student of NYU where he majored in Film and Television. Jerry says he loves sports and wants to be a feature film writer. How does he do it all? A lead in a hit TV series, he has to juggle his filmmaking aspirations and acting career. He seems to handle all, with an easy-go-lucky attitude, pulling each off professionally and creatively. Jerry feels that for each acting part he has to learn the subject and that excites him and will eventually reflect in his writing creations.
Both Jerry and Sabrina are so young, but seem so worldly. Jerry is able to see the whole picture of his career instead of just the day to day scene, or semester by semester view that most college aged kids seem to have. How long will Sliders continue? We hope for as long as the Star Trek legacy and beyond. Because Jerry and Sabrina both know a great script when they see one, Sliders could just be on this planet Earth for a long time to come.
