What I'm doing to be well....

It seems that after all these years of being round-bodied, at 43 things have begun to change. It's all Gunder Frank's fault really. Except for my son (who would never say such a rude thing), g is the only other person I've lived under the same roof with for more than a week at a time in about 15 years....

And since tact is not Gunder's strong suit, he didn't bother to be polite -- and asked if I realized that I was eating all the time....

Once I got over the initial shock and hurt feelings, it dawned on me that I didn't realize I ate so much between meals. Especially when I was working at the computer. So I made some changes.

1. I stopped eating between meals. 3 meals a day -- no more and no less.

2. I stopped eating sweets. Let me qualify that. I drink Fresca instead of caffine-free Coke (my former drink of choice) and I cut out deserts except for an occasional cookie. And that is 1 (one) cookie per day max -- and then only if I'm just going crazy for a little sweetness.

3. I drink water, caffine-free tea, and Fresca all day long. And only an occasional cup of real coffee or black tea.

4. I have something with calcium every day.

5. I have 25g of flax seed or 35g soybeans /some soy product every day.

6. Lots of fruits and veggies

7. I switched to whole grain pasta, pitas, breads and brown rices most of the time.

8. I do the American Heart Association <less-than-30%-calories-from-fat thing every day.

9. I eat oatmeal for breakfast at least 4 times a week. -- without adding butter. It turns out it was the salt flavor I liked anyway, so I just add a little shake -- and get all those reputed cardio-vascular benefits....

10. I cut out almost all fruit juices except for the occasional glass of fresh or Odwalla grapefruit juice (my favorite.) Considering that I used to drink over 16 ounces of juice a day, this has made a big difference.

11. I put a database on the computer that calculates my daily intake. All I have to do is tell it what I've eaten, and it tabulates the % of fat, carb, and protien; the g's of fiber; potassium, calcium, beta carotenes, vitimin C and A -- and most of the other biggies.... So if I miss something important, I can see it at a glance.

12. I walk more. That's about the best I can do for more exercise at this point.

13. I try to eat between 900 and 1200 calories a day. That's actually a lot of room for creativity.

14. My daily averages are about 20% calories from fat; 25% from protien; and 55% from carbs. Pretty good, huh?

15. I switched to low (really low) fat meats and cheeses.

16. I stopped putting butter on veggies and salad dressing on salad. A little lemon juice or balsamic vinigar works just fine.

The graphics on this page are the Venus of Willendorf, one of the oldest sculptures in existence and on display at a museum in Vienna; and one of several drawings by an artist unknown to me (the drawing was sent unidentified) -- but all these little round red-headed women are enough like me to fit appropriately on this page....but the others are all naked... and they look a little TOO much like me.... when I learn the artist's name, I'll include it here.
