Saree Assassins (May 2005).

The 'Bollywood' features have drawn some favourable comment. So following the same theme but this time going off slightly at a tangent here are some Saree killers from the world of Indian TV and movies plus one from a Lollywood film action film thrown in for good measure.

First we have a lady from the Indian TV show 'Saara Akash'. This is a fictional show about Monica Singh, the first woman pilot in the Indian air force. Despite the premise much of the show is based on the ground and around her tangled relationship with fellow pilot Vikram. However the domestic nature of the show gives ample scope for friends and partners of the couple to be spies and terrorists. Here is one particular nasty lady killing off her fellow spy after he fails in his mission to assassinate Monica.

However that was not the end of her deeds. After being caught by her lover making a surreptitious phone call to her spymaster she tries to dispose of him as well.. After a frantic struggle he appears to have the upper hand and appearances are that she is killed. But this lady does not die so easily and she tries again using a gun hidden in a holster hidden under her saree. This time she really does die but in a series like Saara Akash there are always others ready to threaten the well being of the Indian nation but more on that at a later date.

Here are a few fuzzy vidcaps from the Lollywood film 'Koyla'. As is often the case the heroine, attired here in the yellow saree, is being held hostage by the moustache twirling bad guys. But this is a Lollywood film so logic and reality go totally out of the window as she suddenly turns into a gun wielding sharpshooter mowing down the bad guys goons by the dozen. Yes, the film makes no sense by this stage but who cares as the heroine and her co-star take their revenge on the film's villain. I am not sure but I think the actress is Lollywood starlet Saima.

A complete change of pace from the previous film is Bollywood film 'Chhupa Rustom'. This is a fairly dark crime drama which pops up occasionally in Bollywood movies. The plot revolves around a happy go lucky con artist who gets involved with a scheming adulterous step mother who has murder on her mind. Once her husband has been disposed of it isn't long before the woman needs to take other measures to prevent her crime being uncovered.

This is quite a plodding and mostly dull film but the villainess of the piece is one of those characters who has no redeeming features and the film is all the better for it. The evil stepmon is played by  Navneet Nishan.

The last entry in this article comes from the Indian soap 'Sanjivini'. This is a typical soap series based around an Indian hospital and the doctors and nurses who work there. But if you think 'General Hospital' rather than 'ER' you will have more of an idea at how this drama is pitched. In the following stills the evil hospital administrator is killing off one of her underlings who has betrayed her.

In the next edition of the page I hope to include an article about the most evil woman from the world of Indian soaps and boy is she bad - stay tuned.
