When it comes to celebrities, the American public can be unforgiving. How else to explain why John Wayne, dead these past 20 years, managed to come in second on a list of America's favorite stars, while Kevin Costner, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Richard Gere didn't even make the cut? The Duke was runner-up to Harrison Ford, who was voted the country's No. 1 star. The annual Harris poll, released Tuesday, revealed that the 56-year-old Sexiest Man Alive was the top choice of the 1,010 adults surveyed. The big-screen icon also was tops with the all-important, marketer-friendly 18 to 24 crowd. The very much alive Mel Gibson was third after Wayne, while Clint Eastwood (No. 1 last year) and Tom Cruise tied for fourth. Rounding out the Top 10 were Jack Nicholson, Brad Pitt, Sean Connery, Denzel Washington, and Wesley Snipes. Women didn't fare very well in the rankings, with Julia Roberts the highest-charting actress, coming in a dismal No. 15.
