The media frenzy surrounding the fate of Cuban refugee Elian Gonzales has hit home for David
Fumero (Cristian). "I was 8 years old when I came to the United States," explains the actor, who fled Cuba with his parents
and two brothers and settled in Miami about 20 years ago. "So I have a vivid memory of what goes on in Cuba." While Fumero
is quick to support Elian's Miami relatives for fighting to preserve the boy's freedom, the actor admits that the issue is
quite complex. "I also feel bad for his dad, because he's being controlled by Fidel Castro," he says. "This conflict is really
about Communism. [The people in Miami] are fighting against some who violates human rights everyday." Fumero explains that Cubans
"cannot enjoy their own beaches, are not allowed in tourist areas and hotels, and bascdially not enjoy the beauty of their own land."
What makes America so wonderful, Fumero asserts, is that "you are allwed to stand up for what you believe in, so I can understand why
the people in Miami are fighting so hard for this kid."
