David Fumero (Cristian) and his family came
here from Cuba over 20 years ago, happily adopting the rights, privileges
and customs of the U.S. But the one great American indulgence that
Fumero's parents still haven't warmed up to is the soap opera - despite
the fact their son is a fullfledged daytime star. What gives? "First
of all, my mother understands English, but doesn't really speak it,"
explains the actor. "So she really doesn't watch." Of course,
Fumero's mom has caught a glimplse of him from time to time, but there's
another reason why she'll never be a faithful OLTL viewer: She is
used to watching Spanish-language soaps - called novelas -
which, Fumero says, actually have endings, as opposed to being ongoing.
"So when I told her that ou rshow has been on for over 30 years,
she said, 'I could never watch a show for that long! You never know
who's going to end up with whom!'"
