Meet Himura Kenshin, a Rurounin, or "wanderer" would be a good English translation. He's got really cool
hair, but that's not why I like the series. Rurouni Kenshin takes place around 1867 in Japan's Meiji era. This series
is based on a lot of true Japanese history, so you idiots and morons out there who may be afraid of learning a thing or
two should stay away from this series. Of course, Kenshin and the other characters are all fiction, but its based on
real Japanese events (plus a few characters who are really based on real Japanese people).
Well, lets get back to Kenshin. During the Edo dynasty in Japan, Kenshin was a samurai, and he slaughtered thousands of people. He aquired the nickname, Hitokiri Battousai. He was, like, the best killer they had back then. But he was also very, very scary looking, so you little kids out there might get scared. Anyway, when the Edo dynasty ended, a new government was formed, the Meiji. The Meiji is only ten years old when Rurouni Kenshin takes place, and for those ten years, no one has seen or heard of the legendary Hitokiri Battousai. But one day, a woman named Kamiya Kaoru accidentally runs into Kenshin... but he's not the same person he used to be.
It turns out that Himura Kenshin has taken an oath of non-killing. He feels bad about all those lives he took back when he was a Hitokiri (if you murdered thousands of people, you'd feel a tiny bit of guilt too). So in order to make up for the lives he took, he is using his techniques and fighting abilities to protect the ones he loves. He now carries a Sakaba sword, a sword where the blade is reversed. That means that the side of the sword that you attack with has no blade, its dull. So he can't shave with it, unless he reverses the sword and uses the side with the blade (but shaving with a sword might give you a few cuts on your face... or maybe lose part of your chin). Rurouni Kenshin's an excellent anime series, and had definately become one of my favorites, and if you have any taste at all, it'll become one of your favorites too.
The Characters of Rurouni Kenshin Kenshin isn't the only character in this series, find out about the other losers here.
