The Slayers: volume 1 Rating= 9.5
Well, this is the Slayers video that starts it all off, and it happens to be one of
the best ones. This tape is what got me started on the whole Slayers series, the first episode
is what made me fall in love with it. The first tape introduces you to Lina Inverse and her
dumb friend, Gourry Gabriev, who she meets for the first time. This first video comes with four episodes, the
other volumes following this one come with only three. What a friggin' rip off!!! Who the heck do they think
they are giving us four episodes on the first tape in order to suck us into the rest of the series and then
jipping us out of another episode on the other volumes?! Well, the suggested retail price is $19.95 (if you're lucky
you'll find it for cheaper like I did) compaired to other series like Ranma which give you two episodes for 25 bucks.
All in all, its a good price, don't miss out on the first volume of Slayers.
The Slayers: volume 2 Rating= 8.5
Okay, the second volume isn't as good as the first one, but it doesn't mean it sucks by no means.
We find out some interesting things about Zelgadis in this volume, and we meed Noonsa the fishman (who by the way is the dumbest
looking creature I've ever seen in an anime video thus far in my lifespan). We learn more about Rezo, the red priest, and what we learn
about him isn't very pretty. This continues the Slayers story and is a "must get" in order for you to understand the entire series.
The Slayers: volume 3 Rating= 10
Wow, this Slayers tape is amazing, especially the final episode of the tape. I don't give out a rating of ten too
often, but this video takes the cake. The final confrontation with the dark lord, Shabrinigdo is great. And in this episode you'll see that
Lina's Dragon Slave spell isn't the only trick she's got up her sleeve. Don't miss this tape or I'll have to hurt you.
The Slayers: volume 4 Rating= 7
This tape pisses me off. Volume three of Slayers finished off the whole Shabrinigdo storyline, and this volume, volume four,
begins a whole new story... and its also dubbed the "final" volume of The Slayers. It gets me mad that they stop Slayers right in the middle of
a new story like this. In any case, Software Sculpors is gonna eventually release the rest of the episodes of Slayers (episodes 14-26) in the Spring of '98
but that kind of sucks for people like me who have to wait a whole year to see the rest of the episodes. After that Software Sculpors is gonna release Slayers Next (the second
season of Slayers) and after that hopefully Slayers Try (the third season). Well, about volume 4... we get introduced to a new character, Amelia Seyruun and her father, Prince Philionel Seyruun.
Amelia will annoy the hell out of you, and Prince Phil looks like a constapated Smurf. This video is just okay, but you're left at a cliffhanger at the end, so we'll have to wait 'till Spring '98
till we see what happens.
The Slayers: volume 5 Rating= 9.2
HOORAY!!! One year and almost four months after the release of volume 4, Slayers volume 5 has finally arrived! Lisa Ortiz
and Eric Stuart continue their roles as Lina and Gourry, however, Amelia has a new voice actor (this info is for those of you who watched the dubbed versions).
And guess what, everyone? Amelia isn't as annoying anymore!!! That's right, her new voice isn't as annoying as her old one was! (But remember, if you get the subbed version,
you'll be treated with better voices than the dubbed, but they'll just be in japanese with English subtitiles.) Now, on with the review...
Volume 5 was extremely funny, all except for the last episode which was so-so. But Software Sculptors has given us 4 episodes on this volume, so who am I to complain? Anyway, we continue
where volume 4 left off, Lina, Gourry, and Amilia are trying to get to the town of Sairaag, while Zangulus and Vrumugun are trying to capture them. The last episode on the tape I like to refer to
as the "cross-dressing" episode where Gourry dresses up as a woman, and he fight a sea monster that also likes to dress up as a woman. This episode might be a little
too perverted for some people, but not for yours truly. Anyway, volume 5 is packed full of laughs and adventure, so if you're not an idiot, then you'll get volume 5.
The Slayers: volume 6 Rating= 8.5
Another great Slayers video that you're just gonna have to get anyway cause you're a Slayers fan (come on, we both know you are).
Anyway, the videos go back to having three episodes again, but don't worry, these episodes are filled with the humor and action that we've all grown to love.
In the first episode of this volume we have the return of Zelgadis, and for you guys who buy the dubbed, he's got a new voice. Now about his voice... well, its GOOD, but I was kinda
used to Zel's old voice. The new voice (voiced by Crispin Freeman) is a lot deeper, but he's a good actor so I guess I shouldn't complain too much. If anything, I should complain about Sylphiel's voice. We meet
Sylphiel for the first time in this episode and I have to say, her voice kind of sucks. Correction, it REALLY sucks. Sometimes I wonder where they find some of these people to do voices in anime. They should have some kind of
regulation or rule saying that people who voice for anime must possess some kind of acting skill. I mean, come on, they could have found SOMEBODY BETTER. Well, all in all, this tape was really good, story wise. We've got the return of Rezo the
Red priest (thought he died, didn't ya?) and a couple of other new characters. Just think about it, we're already halfway through with the next four Slayers tapes and we're almost finished with the entire first season, kinda scary, ain't it?
The Slayers: volume 7 Rating= 7.2
Well here we go, Gourry versus Zangulus is the first episode we're introduced to in this volume. The fight was pretty cool, Zangulus and Gourry decide to duke it out one last time to see which one of them is the
better swordsman. Lets see if you have enough intelligence to predict the outcome... Anyway, just to let you know Sylphiel's voice REALLY gets on my nerves! Come on, put a little emotion into that voice acting please!!! I highly reccomend getting the subtitled
version cause Sylphiel talks a lot during this volume and her voice really makes me sick. My favorite epsiode was the one where there was this chicken in it, he was just very stupid looking but he didn't turn out to be what Lina, Zel, Gourry, Amelia, and Sylphiel thought.
We also learn a little more about Rezo and Eris in the last episode, lots of action and excitement. Now you may be wondering why I gave this volume only a 7.2 rating... the reason is because the dialogue in this episode sucks. It wasn't overly funny (like volume 5 and 6) it was just
like a regular Slayers video (although I still loved it). So no matter what, you HAVE to get this video, just know that I didn't think it was as good as some of the others.
Slayers Perfect (Slayers movie) Rating= 7.6
The first Slayers movie was okay.
Anyway, in the movie you've got this annoying little green frog who's actually a demon... pretty strange, right? But the little frog thing is funny cause he looks like a little terd with feet.
The movie's humor isn't as good as the Slayers Specials or the T.V. series, but there is some humor to it. Lina and Naga travel to this island that's seperated itself from normal time by its own free will. It did this cause of a horrible massacre that
took place there a looooong time ago. Remember, the Slayers movies and specials take place BEFORE the T.V. series, so you won't find Gourry, Amelia, or Zelgadis here... just big busted Naga. There's a lot of Slayers history thrown into this movie, we meet Roudy Gabriev (his last name sounds kinda familiar, huh?).
We also take a look at the sword of light one more time, but this is BEFORE Lina has met Gourry. So why does someone else have it? I guess you're gonna have to find out! (This review has been modified slightly for the release of the Slayers movie in North America)
Slayers Return (Slayers movie 2) Rating= 7.5
Okay, the second Slayers movie was okay too. It was funnier than the first movie, but the story wasn't as good. It turns out this village has been enslaved by some bad guy who's trying to dig out
something that ancient elves buried in the village a long time ago. Lina and Naga try to help the village when one of the citizens escapes looking for help. Of course, the ONLY reason Lina helps is cause she knows
how wealthy the elves were and is hoping to cash in on some of their long lost treasure. Lina's such a little @$#%&/#!!!!
Slayers Great (Slayers movie 3) Rating= 9.6
This has GOT to be the best Slayers movie they ever made! I laughed my @$$ off and then after that, laughed some more. Okay, so the first 15- 20 minutes of the movie wasn't all that exciting, but towards the middle and end of the movie,
it totally rocks. Turns out that there's a father/son battle over who can make the best Golem. The son makes sexy Golems, the father makes cute golems. Definitely impacts the final battle scene of the movie. And guess what? Naga and Lina turn on one another! That's right, now you get to
see which one of them would win in a fight! I can't get over the final battle scene as Lina and Naga fight inside two giant Golems, it has to be the funniest fighting scene I've ever SEEN! You know, it probably sucks if you didn't see this movie, I feel bad for you, I do, I really do...
Slayers Special #1 Rating= 9
For those of you who are horny over Naga, this is the Slayers for you. Turns out some mad scientist made ten copied clones of Naga,
and each of them with the same annoying laugh. This Slayers is really funny, Naga cracks me up. Again, if you have a problem getting fansubbed anime, well then you're missing out
on some really funny episodes. I guess you can't all be as cool as me.
Slayers Special #2 Rating= 8.5
This special deals with this dinky, dorky, nerdy, little man who wants to become a knight. I don't think so. He looks like Pee-Wee Herman. But his mom doesn't think so.
If you say something bad about him, his mom comes out of nowhere and beats you to a living pulp. No one's gonna mess with her little boy. Where do Naga and Lina fit into all of this? Well,
it's their jobs to train this guy, this total loser, into becoming the greatest knight ever. Funny episode, so don't miss it.
Slayers Special #3 Rating= 8
This special has Lina and Naga hunting for this magic mirror which can make a shadow copy of whoever looks into it. But the shadow copy has the complete opposite personality of the person
it was copied from... for example, if you were a good person, and you had a shadow copy made of you, you'd still have the same powers and abilities, you'd just be evil. Well, Lina doesn't really believe it exists
but she agrees to go hunting for it... and when she DOES find it, its not all its cracked up to be. Remember the loser knight from the Slayers Special #2? Well, lets just say that you're copies may turn out worse than him.
