Jim Ellison has always had a tough life. His mother is gone, and it is unclear as to if she died, or simply left. His father was not very loving, and constantly forced Jim and his younger brother Stephen to compete. This led to Jim and Stephen not speaking for 15 years. He married Caroyln Plummer, and they divorced after a short time, not able to get along anymore, and Carolyn has said that the love was gone from the relationship.
To get away from his family, Jim joined the United States Army and became an Army Ranger, the most elite combat force in the world. Quickly rising through the ranks to Captain, Ellison was sent with a team of 7 men to Peru. Their misson was to set up a militia of the natives. But something went horribly wrong. Their helicopter was shot down, killing 7 of the men on the mission, except Jim Ellison.
Stranded in the jungles of Peru for 18 months, Ellison continued his mission, unaware that he was listed MIA. It was during this time that Ellison developed his heightened senses.
When he was rescued, the senses went back to normal, for a while. Returning to the states, Ellison got a honorable discharge from the Army. He joined the Mjaor Crimes Unit of the Cascade Police Department a short while later, and was partned with Jack Pendergrast, who taught Jim everything he knew.
Years later, Ellison was on a stakeout for a length of time, and this time alone brought out the senses. Fearing that he was going crazy, Ellison went to the doctor, but got a lot more than he bargained for. Blair Sandburg poised as a doctor got Ellison to his office at the University and explained to Ellison about the senses and that with Sandburgs help, they could be controlled. Convincing Ellison's captain that it would be a good idea, Blair was granted 'observer' status in the department.
Jim Ellison is known in the Major Crimes department as the guy to give cases to when they're stuck. He doesn't like having other partners other than Bliar, and will quickly let them know. He also doesn't like people trying to help him on a case. He likes to work things out on his own.
Jim has had a lot of relationships, non of which working out for long. This might have something to do with the fact that Jim never opens up. He prefers to keep to himself regarding his emotions, and everything else.
Even though he left the military a number of years ago, there are remnants of the discipline left. The loft which he shares with Blair is meticulous, he keeps the crewcut hair, and seems to enjoy danger.
Ellison is equally adapt with handguns as he is machine guns, rifles, and almost all types of weapons. Even with a bow and arrow!! (little bit of the jungle life remains)
Much of Ellisons past remains a mystery. The Army years of his life will most likely remain in the dark, due to being involved covert-ops, sworn to secrecy.
But this much is the same, Ellison is an excellent cop, and will continue to fight the evils of Cascade Washington as long as he is able.
