Picture this:out of nowhere, a fifteen year-old boy tells his father that he is kinda nervous because he hasn't kissed anyone in his life and he doesnīt know what the outcome will be when he does. His father tells him that there's nothing to worry about, it will be all natural. But there won't be any hurt if he starts rehearsing now. So the father hands his son a model of a human head and asks him to kiss it. As if that wasn't eerie enough, without any hesitation,
the son goes on and kisses the little head. He even closes his eyes. After the big kiss is done, the son thanks his father and goes off to film a little movie with his friends, because, as faith would have it, the son wants to be a filmmaker. Both father and son end up with a big smile.
Is that corny or what?
That is one of the many silly, dumb, and unreal situations portrayed every week in the tv-drama "Dawson's Creek". The series, which follows the life of a group of fifteen year-old friends, often shows precocious stories and ridicolously sophisticated dialogue.
If this wasnīt bad enough, the cast seems to be on a whole different planet all the time. First of all, they all are in their early twenties,(James Van Der Beek, 21, Michelle Williams, 18, Joshua Jackson, 20, Katie Holmes, 19). They don't look like 15 year-olds, for crying out loud! Second, Katie Holmes is the only one who tries to do some acting, while the other three donīt have a clue. Specially Van Der Beek, who always plays the main character, Dawson, in a I'm-cool -and-I-know-about-it way.
"Dawson's Creek is the hottest drama on TV" states the Entertainment Weekly magazine, praising the show, just as hundreds of publications have been doing it since "Dawson" appeared almost a year ago. But if "Dawson's Creek" is such an amazing show, Why did it was ranked 121 out of 156 on Nielsenīs list of last season's networks shows, a list which is ranked by total viewers?. The media has introduced in our collective consciousness the notion that the series is a damn good one, and we have chosen to believe it. Series based on the life and relationships of teenagers
have always been a recurrent subject of TV. Just chek out the "Beverly Hills 90210" phenomenon. But was this one really necesary?
I only hope that as time goes by, the WB executives, and more importantly, the audience, realizes just how moronic "Dawson's Creek" can really be.
