Maybe it all began when the Warner Brothers Film Studios decided to get a share of the television market by creating their own network. Being as half as popular (at least) as the other four major networks -ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC- in their first year was their primary goal. They had it all in order to succeed: publicity, well written programs, good actors and directors. However, something went wrong.
A lethal combination of bad reviews and dumb-themed shows made the audiences change the channel.
I mean, who would like to see a show about a dumb soldier adapting to the though army life, like in "The Army Show"? Or how would you like another sitcom about stereotypical black men, with their typical problems? How about three of them: "The Wayans Bros.", "The Jamie Foxx Show" and "The Steve Harvey Show"? Or how about a boy who comes back home with the hope to restablish his hometown's economy and also with a jealous brother who will try anything to stop him, like in "Hyperion Bay"? Hadn't someone done that before?
Well, someone forgot to tell that to the WB's executives. So they had to hang on to "Buffy, the vampire slayer", their only popular show, a spin-off of the dreadful movie. They needed something to assure them that the whole idea of the WB Network hadn´t been a hoax. They needed something that would bring them sponsors, audience, and faith in the future. That something was called "Dawson's Creek".
After "Dawson's" premiered last January, it atractted enough viewers to make it the WB's top-ranked series virtually overnight.
Without any doubt, advertisers became the show´s biggest fans.
They developed a crush in the series's demo: young girls in record numbers. On some Tuesdays, the day the show is broadcasted in, almost 50% of all female teens watching TV at 9 P.M. turned in to 'Dawson' "(1). That´s why a 30 second ad in "Dawson's" is between $150 000 to $200 000 dollars.
If that wasn´t enough, the show earned the fourth most affluent viewership among all network shows,(its audience hasn't stopped growing) which explains why the series has become a sensation.
So, maybe the plot lines of "Dawson's Creek" are corny. Maybe the actors don't look and behave as fifteen-year-olds. But, who cares? The people seems to like it. And each day they like it more.
Isn't that the main purpose of all television programs?
