Michelle Young has received a national award from the National
Federation of Press Women (NFPW) at its annual conference in St.
Paul, Minnesota.
The awards banquet was held the evening of June 21, 1997,
at the Radisson Hotel in St. Paul.
Young received second place in the general nonfiction book
category for her co-authored book, Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow:
Meeting the Challenge of Our Multicultural America & Beyond,
published by Caddo Gap Press
(ISBN 1-880192-18-7). She co-authored the book with Paul D. Christiansen.
"A wide range of interesting excerpts and stories of
people from around the world. Excellent job of coherently presenting
their stories and views, bridging them with insightful commentary.
People in academic and non-academic settings should read this
book as they struggle to understand the concept of multiculturalism,"
wrote one of the judges, who included a former foreign correspondent
and Pulitzer Prize winner in international reporting, magazine
editors and journalism professors. The judges, from Kansas City,
MO; Overland Park, KS; Birmingham, AL; Las Vegas, NV; San Angelo,
TX; Hertford, NC; Seloam Springs, AR, and Irvine, CA, commented
that they were impressed with the array of talent and skills of
NFPW members and writing talent abounds in the NFPW.
Approximately 1,300 entries were forwarded by state affiliates
to NFPW for judging in the national competition. Of those, there
were 657 winners. The most entries were in these categories--news
reporting, electronic media, public relations printed materials,
special articles, feature story and photography.
One objective of the communications contest is to help NFPW
members test their abilities, learn from the experience and improve
their work.
The NFPW, who is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year,
is an organization of working women and men journalists in all
fields of communications -- newspapers, public relations, advertising,
radio, television, photography, book publishing and education.
NFPW national projects include literacy events, co-sponsored
with newspapers; educational seminars, youth communications contests,
college scholarships and career events.
