It was a hot day as the stage rolled through the quiet Texan countryside. Danny Crawford sat inside trying to cool herself off by fanning herself with her hat at the same time, she attempted to write in a small leather bound journal. All she could really think about was reaching her destination and getting off the infernal coach. She didn't care that much about meeting her cousin. |
|
Maggie stepped off the sidewalk and onto the dusty street. She brought her hand up to shield her eyes from the glaring mid-afternoon sun, as she looked up and down the main street in Ft. Laramie. Dust choked the air from horses and stagecoaches passing by. "Why bother," she said to no one in particular as she started towards the Saloon. "I look for him everytime, expecting him to be somewhere other than the saloon." "I gotta stop talking to myself or people are gonna start talking about me!"

It was a dry windy day in Four Corners and Mary Travis was waiting for the stage to arrive. Though she wasn't waiting for the arrival of her son Billy, but for someone else. She was waiting for Angelica Stuart and her father the Reverend Thomas Stuart, who used to be the town's minister. The reverend was leaving his daughter in town in the care of Mary while he went to Dodge City to try to turn into a righteous place. It's not that Angelica needed looking after at the age of 18, but her father wanted to insure her safety. He knew of the seven men who guarded the town and knew that would be the securest place for his daughter.

Every day in Four Corners is quiet. Okay. Fairly Quiet. It seems that at any given time one of its seven lawmen could find trouble, or trouble would find them. Today was no exception. Everything looked quiet enough. But like everything else, looks can be deceiving. Mary Travis was walking out of the General Store when she spotted Chris Larabee and Vin Tanner across the street. From the looks of it they were playing cards. She hesitated a step and nodded to them good morning. After Mr. Larabee tipped his hat in polite acknowledgment, she continued on her way to the Clarion News Office.

Author was not aware that JD's mother had died! This is fanfic..so anything is possible! ;o) "Stage coach is coming in any minute now." Frowned Vin as he glanced out the window of the saloon. Buck merely grunted in acknowledgment as he poured himself another drink. "Come on we should go meet it, just in case." "Let's go." Agreed Buck reluctantly as he downed his drink in one shot. Getting up the two men headed out of the saloon doors and into the street. When they arrived at the spot where the stagecoach was scheduled to arrive they leaned against the porch beams boredly and waited. A minute later they could see the tell tale signs of dust on the horizon as the coach came near. Moments later it came to stop directly in front of Vin and Buck. The driver climbed down from his perch and started to unload the luggage while two businessmen got out and stretched their legs. They took their cases and started to head towards the hotel.

Victoria Watson and her brother Nicholas had only been in Four Corners for four days and Vicky was already in the habit of sitting on one of the benches outside the saloon doors every morning with a cup of coffee. The first change she had made when she arrived in the town and realized she and Nicholas were the new owners of not only the hotel, but the adjoining restaurant and the saloon, was to change the saloon's opening time from 8:00 in the morning to noon. The staff were happy with the change but the evening bartender, Bert, warned Vicky that some regulars wouldn't be happy. "Those seven - Larabee and the others - will have something to say. The saloon's like their headquarters."

"AMBUSH!" Chris shouted. The four men spurred their horses forward as shots whizzed by their heads and ricocheted off the nearby rocks. Chris brought his arm across his chest and fired over his shoulder as Vin turned in his saddle and fired. Ezra and Josiah raced ahead. Chris turned to see Vin catch a bullet and slump over his saddle, his horse never breaking stride. It was a miracle he managed to stay on. Chris veered his still galloping horse over and grabbed the reins of Vin's horse. He could no longer shoot so he just kept his head down and didn't look back, riding like the devil himself was on their heels.

The wild prairie grass was still this day as the sunlight streamed across the peaceful land. A herd of cattle grazed quietly as two men in cowboy hats zig-zagged among the bulls. Chris Larabee and Buck Wilmington kept their heads low as they made their wy through the pasture. They paused only long enough to check the branding on each steer they came near and were shaking their heads until Buck gave a quiet shout of victory. They had indeed found the missing cattle that had been rustled away from Cleve Dowling's herd during a cattle drive. Both men crept toward the ranch house when they suddenly found themselves being fired upon.

The horses breath crystallized on the frosty early afternoon air. Their riders huddled against the wind bundled in layers of wool and leather clothing. Josiah's tan weather worn hat secured to his head by a wool scarf tied under his grizzled chin. His bay gelding's black mane had iced over white, with a mittened hand he patted the frosted furred neck encouragingly. In front of him rode Buck and Vin both men dressed similarly. Vin's wild colored paint led now giving Buck's chestnut horse a rest from breaking trail. Sanchez swiveled around in his saddled and smiled at Ezra. The large ex-preacher chuckled, How you doing Ezra? Standish rode just behind Josiah his roan gelding had icicles hanging from its whiskers and nostrils. The southern gambler's sarcastic smile was hidden by his upright overcoat collar and merely nodded.

|
Ezra gazed at the dust covered unshaven faces that surrounded him. Now fine sir we do not want to have to ask again. Where is that bounty hunter friend of yours, Mr. Tanner? The man who spoke gripped the gamblers chin roughly. Standish's wrists were bound tightly behind his back. His over coat and suit coat had long been stripped from him, leaving him shivering in the winter night.
|
|
Standish picked up his pace, his breath crystallizing on the air. His normally cleaned pants and tailored jacket were dusty, wrinkled and mud covered. His black squat hat had seen better days its original midnight black hidden under a sheen of grit. He practically jogged down the dirt road as he impatiently made his way toward the boarding house. He skipped the middle step as he bounded up the three steps onto the planked boardwalk and brusquely pushed his way through the wooden door. The door slammed behind him causing the glass window to rattle and the small bordering curtains to billow.

Chris Larabee breezed through the bat wing doors of the saloon. His black duster billowing behind him giving the gunslinger a surreal appearance. He quickly surveyed the area and headed for the round table his other five compatriots occupied. Buck and Vin could be heard chuckling over the din of the other patrons. JD hung his head probably the target of another verbal jab, Chris used as he smoothly closed the distance to the table. Josiah and Nathan sat facing the doors and noticed their leader enter. Hey Chris. Nathan said as Larabee drew closer. The gunslinger slid a chair over and joined the others. He nodded to the others in greeting, and poured himself a shot of red eye.

The two men entered the hotel lobby and paused, taking in the crude surroundings. The larger of the two wore a long, dark duster with a red vest underneath. He sported a bushy mustache, which covered his upper lip. His partner, a much younger man, balding prematurely, but with a boyish face wore a plain brown coat and trousers. Both men carried six-shooters strapped to their hips. They approached the counter and were met by the hotel manager, a small middle-aged man, who assumed by their dress they were either businessmen, lawyers or hired guns, either way, men of position, which meant men of money.

He couldn't breathe. Driven to his knees by the young firestarter, he desperately tried to suck in some clean air. The sharp blow to his stomach had forced the breath from his lungs, and now it was all he could do to draw even heavy smoke into them. Time stood still, and everything was perfectly clear this time around in a way it hadn't been in actuality. He could feel the sharp edges of straw digging through the knees of his trousers. It bit into his right palm where he leaned on the ground for balance. The heat of the growing blaze washed over him in waves; soot streaked his face, tears stung his eyes. He could hear the crackle of the flames, the whinny of horses outside the stables. Ezra prayed his horse--the only companion he'd ever trusted implicitly--had gotten out safely. With the combination of tears and smoke hampering his vision, he couldn't see well enough to be sure he had.

|
The three men raced their horses into the town, one rider voicing his exhilaration as they neared the stables. The chestnut stallion and gray pulled ahead of the paint and came to a stop just outside the huge stable doors causing a small tornado of dust to billow up around the horse's hooves. Both men grinned back at the young man who pulled up moments later, humbled annoyance showing on his boyish visage.

Kate walked into the living room, shaking her head as she heard Matt and Reed bickering. Again. "Where's Billy?" she asked Andy, who was sitting in his chair, working on his laptop. Andy looked up at her. "He's up in his room," he said. Kate tilted her head. "That's--," she started, but Reed and Matt crashing into a chair got her attention. "You guys!" she cried. A loud shrill whistle came from somewhere. Billy was on the stairs, staring at the wrestling pair. "Matt, go home to your wife," he said.
