Third Class Passengers, board now:
You're ready to begin a new life in America. You are excited that you made the Maiden Voyage of the Titanic. The Titanic, Wow, Yes you're on-board the grandest ship ever built. Your Entire family and many of your relatives are with you. Everyone is so happy and joyful. Your Ticket costs you $30. (which is comparable to $345. in today's money). You head down to your cabin on F deck. You're impressed again. Your stateroom is like that of 2nd class on other ships. The people at White Star, sure know how to treat you. You get settled and then venture out of your cabin. You head over to the Poop Deck. The Titanic has a public gathering place for third class passengers, other ships didn't have this. All is going well for a few days on-board the Titanic, and you are having a great time. You're more and more anxious to begin your new life in America. The Titanic Steams toward N.Y.C. at a speed of 21 knots. On the Night of April 14, 1912, you are awaken by a steward breaking your door open. He is Yelling at you, to get up and put on your lifejacket. You get up and put your life-jacket, knowing that it will serve little use in the icy 32 degree water. You are assured that all is well, and that this is just a precaution. But as you proceed to head up to the boat deck, to get into a lifeboat, the entrance is locked. You can't get up to the Boat Deck. By the Time they let you and the rest of the third class passengers up, there aren't many boats left. Many have already left only half-full or with just a few on-board. Employees ask for the lifeboats to return and pick-up more passengers, but they can see too well, that the ship is sinking, and they don't want to risk it. Lucky for you, You found a seat in one of the last lifeboats. You board the Carpathia, which picked up the lifeboats, around 7am on April 15. When you look around, you realize that only a few of your family members survived. In deed, the Third Class Passenger survival rate was very low. You made it to America, but unfortunately, not many did onboard the Titanic. First Class Passengers, please board now:
You have been on the Titanic for just 10 minutes when you saw John Jacob Astor, the richest person on-board. You thought to yourself what a privilege it was to see someone who had their own private promenade. You decide to go to your room and see what it looks like. you have never seen such a gorgeous stateroom in your life, and you've been on many crossings. As you are standing in awe, you realize that if you don't hurry you will miss dinner. To get to the dining hall, you have to walk on the Forward Grand Staircase. After you eat one of the finest meals of your life, you head to either the (Reading and Writing Room for the Ladies) or the (Smoking Room for the Men). You continue to have a great time onboard. You go to bed on the nite of April 14, a very happy person. You are sleeping sound, because the seas are very calm, until the steward knock's on your door. It's just over midnight, you think to yourself, what could he possibly want from you. Then you realize that the ship isn't moving. You answer the door, and he tells to put on your lifevest and head up to the boat deck. You are very worried, and ask him "Is the ship sinking?". He reassures you that the ship is in absolutely no danger. You do as he says, but as you get to the Grand Staircase, you see that many of the other First Class passengers, didn't go out on the boat deck, they stayed inside because it was warm inside, and cold outside. You asked them, "Why aren't you going outside"? They tell you, "Why go outside and be cold, when you can stay here and stay warm, this ship could never sink.". You decide that you, might as well, go outside. When you get outside, you see Mr. and Mrs. Strauss. You overheard what they said. Mrs. Straus, was asked to board the lifeboat, and she said "I won't go without my Husband, we lived with each other, so shall we die together". Then the officer told Mr. Straus to take a seat, and he said "I won't go before the younger men". You think to yourself "Those two are the bravest people, I've seen in a long time". Then you look to the other side, and see people refusing to enter a boat, because they thought that they would be returned to the Titanic after they fixed the problem. Just then, an officer tells you to take a seat on the lifeboat. You take a seat, along with about 30 others. You traveled alone on-board and the majority of your friends that you met, got off the ship. You forever remembered the voyage on-board the Titanic. It was the most beautiful ship you went on. |
