The ship was built at the Harland and Wolff Shipbuilding in Belfast Northern Ireland in 1912. She was 882 feet long and had a gross tonnage of 45 000 ton. She was owned by The White Star Line who were going to use her (and her sister which was an identical ship but she was called The Olympic) to the Atlantic traffic between Southampton and New York, USA. The Titanic only carried 16 lifeboats, and 4 life rafts which is very little if you think of that the boat carried about 3200 passengers and crew. Altogether the lifeboats could take only 1200 of the passengers. Anyhow, the passengers could choose between 1st, 2nd and third class for their voyage. The difference in price was huge (£870 for a first class ticket and as little as £ 2 for a third class one..) and of course the majority of passengers was third-class passengers.
