Episode 12 - "JUDGEMENT "
Air Date - 1/21/99

We open with Mr. Chapel lurking in the dark, waiting for another mysterious figure who has a big bag of money. The guy is Stan Garko. He is taking money to Mr. Chapel for his boss, Judge Wabash. During the exchange, Stan pulls a hidden gun and shoots Chapel in the stomach. Chapel knocks him down the stairs, grabs the money and staggers back to his motel to find KC. "I'm shot."

KC is distraught. She wants to call a doctor - he says, no, call this guy Richard. A doctor who owes a favor? Well, a veterinarian. Now, KC is really distraught, "Oh my God! Oh My God!" Waiting for the vet to arrive. Chapel is really hurt. KC says "Oh My God!" so many times that Chapel says "Don't say that anymore. When the vet comes, he is extremely nervous to find himself expected to remove a bullet from a human. He declares that he hasn't had much experience in doing this. KC: "Oh My God!" Chapel: "Okay, this is the rule. No one says 'Oh My God' one more time!" The vet says he did this type of thing once before - a hunting accident with a Springer Spaniel. KC wants to know how that turned out. The Vet: "Badly, I'm afraid". Chapel: "Oh My God!". The operation goes ahead with KC assisting.

Meanwhile, Stan has reported in to his boss, Judge Wabash. Now, Judge Wabash is the judge who can drop the lid on Teflon Don, Mike Sanricci. Trouble is, he's planning to let Sanricci go. He has grabbed Stan Garko from the witness protection program and is blackmailing him with threat of exposure to help him deal with Chapel who is holding the judge's money to assure that the Judge "does the right thing". The Mob really wants a piece of Garko, since he flipped and sent a bunch of people to jail. If the Judge tells Sanricci that Garko is not only still alive, but right in front of them, Garko is dead. The Judge wants to send Garko after Chapel to get his money back because he was to show Chapel the money and then get rid of him. Chapel dropped his coffee cup bearing the insignia of the Paladin Motel where he is staying. Garko has it and is hot on Chapel's trail.

Chapel knows Stan is going to come looking for him and is going to be prepared. Chapel calls the judge just as the judge is getting a package. Chapel tells him to look in the package and he finds a whole bunch of his money shredded expertly into a million little pieces. Chapel tells him there's still some money left, but he has to do the right thing if he doesn't want the rest shredded. The Judge is furious. He tells Garko to get the money back or he'll expose him to the Mob. Chapel, meanwhile, gets hold of the owner of the motel chain - another favoree - and has the motel emptied out. When Stan gets there, he finds Chapel's room number (now, how he knows Chapel's real name is beyond me) and breaks into the room. No one is there, natch. Then, a wounded Chapel gets the drop on him and whaps him into unconsciousness. He tells Stan that he can get the Mob on him if he doesn't cooperate with him. He tells him men are coming to kill Stan and he wants Stan to stay right there. "I'll be watchin' out for ya". Stan is not fully convinced, but stays put.

Chapel contacts Joey Lazar - imprisoned crime boss from Episode 3 - "EDEN". He gets Joey to contact Mike Sanricci and tell him that the Judge is working with Stan Garko to double-cross Sanricci. Sanricci's lawyer and nephew go after the Judge. They threaten to cut off the Judge's thumb with a pair of evil-looking plant shears. The Judge claims innocence and tells them Garko is working with Chapel and tells the mob guys where to find them. Meanwhile, back at the empty motel, Sanricci's nephew and lawyer and an additional piece of muscle find a sign - "Welcome All Mafia Members. Reunion in the Basement". They find Stan waiting. Chapel pounces, releasing Stan and they capture the nephew. After suitably terrorizing him and telling him that the Judge wants him dead, they allow him to "escape", knowing he's on his way to find the Judge at the courthouse. KC has placed the Judge's money under his bench - soaked with lighter fluid. Stan and Chapel go to the courthouse and send KC off to call 911. "Tell'em there's going to be a killing. Maybe more than one."

The Judge finds Stan at the courthouse and threatens him, but Stan just throws the Judge a gun and leaves. The Judge gets one more phone warning from Chapel to do the right thing, but blows it off, takes the gun, and heads for his bench to get his money. He opens the bag and Chapel materializes out of nowhere, throwing a match into the bag. The money is going up in flames. The Sanricci nephew is coming. The Judge is going after Chapel with Stan's gun. He finds Stan, instead. There is a scuffle and Stan is shot. He slips out and the cops shoot Luke just as he kills the Judge. Two killings - maybe another.

As they are driving away, Stan tells Chapel that he's been shot, but can't go to a doctor. Chapel asks him where he's shot and the answer is accompanied by a blood-producing cough. Stan is fatally injured and Chapel knows it. As Chapel is telling Stan that he knows this vet, and Stan hasn't lived until he's tried horse tranquilizer, Stan dies. Cheated of his life of freedom forever now. There are tears on Chapel's face as the episode ends.
