Episode 14 - "CRITICAL"
Air Date - 2/4/99

Ben Newton's father is finding out he is in remission from cancer and will live longer than expected. He son is aware that his father now plans to alter his will (considerable estate, here) to give most everything to charitable organizations. Ben, quite a whiz at managing money, has decided Dad must be declared incompetent. Dad won't agree, so Ben kills him by bashing him upside the head with a big object d'art, failing to notice that his sister, Debbie, is present. Ben is arrested for his father's murder.

Ben's buddy, Kevin Battle, testifies that Ben was with him the whole time of the murder and Ben's attorney throws suspicion onto sister Debbie, saying that she's framing her brother for the murder in order to be next in line for the enormous estate. Reasonable doubt + an alibi = Ben free to go. Debbie is furious and it isn't long before The Envelope and The Phone Number show up at her door. She's ready to go for it, but doesn't want Ben actually hurt physically. Promise extracted, she gives Chapel and KC the rundown on Ben. He doesn't have but two friends - Kevin and a little computer genius, Gina, who has a big crush on him. He likes to spend most of his time on his computer, moving and making money. Gina is being used, actually, for her talent at computer-related things. Now, after filling them in, Debbie leaves town like Chapel asks.

The scam is started; bugs and hidden cameras in place. Ben comes home and finds a receipt for an Egyptian cat statue - very expensive - and then finds the statue sitting on the desk. He can't remember buying it, but his signature IS on the receipt. He's starting to worry about his memory, just a little bit. The next morning, he is almost at the garage to get his Ferrari when the phone rings. He runs back into the house to answer it.

It's Mr. Chapel, taking on the role of Marine Sargent Butler, telling Ben that he has to finish filling out his application to join the Marines. Ben screams at the Sargent that he didn't join the Marines and never wanted to; he must be mistaken. The Sargent describes Ben and gives him a few more tidbits of personal information so Ben is convinced that he must have visited the Marine Recruiting Center and not been aware of it . He is more and more nervous about his mental health. THEN, when he goes back to get his car, the car is now sitting out of the garage in the drive. He's pretty sure he didn't put it there, but he isn't all THAT sure, by now.

When he gets home, he gets a very agitated visitor demanding that he pay up the 3 million dollars he owes. The visitor roughs him up a bit and shows him a police badge. Detective Maurice Campbell (aka - Mr. Chapel!). "Detective Campbell" says that he arranged for Kevin to testify falsely for Ben and Ben has promised Campbell the 3 million clams. Ben is frightened, because Detective Campbell is a very frightening man, let's face it. Ben has Gina hack into the police computers and find information on Detective Campbell. There is a short race against time when Chapel manages to substitute his own picture for that of the real Detective Campbell, who has been suspended from the police force. The ruse is saved, and now, Ben is really afraid of Campbell.

Chapel wants Gina to get lost because she's in the way, so he arranges for her to be invited to a computer camp that she wants very much to go to. She is so infatuated with Ben that she turns it down. Chapel's next move is to take some tranquilizers and go visit Ben. Remaining out of sight, he creates a diversion and while Ben is out, the tranquilizers go in Ben's drink. When Ben comes to, there is a freshly turned mound of dirt in the yard, and Campbell is sitting beside him. Campbell tells Ben he found Ben passed out by the grave, the sister still moaning on the ground. He informs Ben that he put sister Debbie out of her misery and finished burying her. Ben thinks now, that he tried to also kill his sister. Campbell is really pressuring him about the 3 million bucks, and now wants an extra million for helping to get rid of Debbie.

Chapel and Ben go to a cafe to talk. Ben tries to pay the bill and the waitress informs him he has to use real money, not Monopoly money. He sees the fake money and is again afraid that he's losing his mind. When he gets up to walk away, he sees fake money on everyone's table. Chapel lags behind and tells the cafe full of people that they are all even and he's out of their lives forever. A whole cafe of Favorees! And outside the cafe, more favorees - exchanging play money with Ben, driving him wild with worry about his mental state.

More computer games and Chapel manages to donate all of Ben's worldly goods to various non-profit organizations, who arrive at Ben's house to collect furniture, his Ferrari, works of art - the whole shooting match. Ben is livid by now, AND, in the meantime, KC and Chapel have kidnapped Kevin and he is being kept prisoner until further notice. He is blindfolded and doesn't see his kidnappers.

Ben finds that his money is gone (according to the computer) and he calls Gina to find out what happened. She works and works and finally traces the problem back to Chapel. She goes to confront him about harassing Ben. She is pretty cute, this Gina girl. She tells KC and Chapel that they are "witless, unconscionable vigilantes" and she's gonna go to the police. Doesn't believe Ben could have killed his father. Chapel finally gives in and tells KC he's going to go with Gina to the police department to let her turn him in. KC buys this, because he gives her 20,000 bucks and tells her to go undercover. He tells her it's over; nothing lasts forever. She's pretty upset and tells him goodbye.

At the police department, Chapel and Gina are relegated to fill in endless forms so he has a chance to talk to her. She ends up agreeing to let him prove to her that Ben IS guilty. She doesn't turn him in, yet. KC is pretty happy to see Chapel again. He tells her the girl kinda forced him to wing it, she could actually have turned him in if she wanted to. It was a pretty close call. Chapel goes back to see Ben, letting Gina sit with KC and watch the visit on hidden camera. Ben talks freely with Detective Campbell and Gina hears him admit to killing his father and helping kill his sister. She is heartbroken, but now on Chapel and KC's side.

Chapel arranges for the police to find Kevin and Kevin thinks Ben had him kidnapped. Ben is arrested for the kidnapping and sent off to a mental institution for the duration. Debbie comes home, PAYS the million-dollar fee to Chapel and all ends well. Gina is friends with Chapel and KC, and happily on her way to Computer Camp, thanks to Chapel. But, she figures he owes her a favor, now, for not turning him in. They say their farewells and she says she'll be in touch about that favor.

This was kind of not up there in my favorite episodes, but perhaps a second viewing will be better. I was furiously taking notes and may have missed a couple of things, BUT ... I'm doin' the best I can, folks . A writer, I am not. See you all next week. A few more episodes left before it all goes away - and who knows? Maybe the letter writing campaign WILL work. It could happen!
