"Bad Town, bad Sheriff, even a bad bartender." - This is Eden - a town where the local law-dawg, James Broll, is busy getting rich by planting drugs in visiting vehicles, then confiscating said vehicles for profit. He picks on a couple (whose name I cannot pronounce, let alone spell) and is caught planting the drugs on their boat. He shoots the husband and the wife is left to explain why she has drugs in the boat. A deputy named Watkins is having serious qualms about the operation so he is killed by Broll and his cronies, Bob the mayor, JJ the bartender, and Hubbel the deputy. They hide the body well. KC turns Chapel on to this operation in Eden, and he sends the aggrieved wife "The Folder" with his number. She calls him and he tells her he's on it; he expects a Favor, and "You don't have any more problems; they all belong to me, now." Off to Eden. Sinatra on the radio. First chump: Hubbel. Chapel gets himself stopped by Hubbel and makes a big stink about Hubbel not touching the trunk of his car. Of course, Hubbel goes right for it, and gets poison on his hands from trying to open it. Passes out, cold. Chapel is so damned funny. Watches Hubbel hit the ground and mutters, "Well, alrighty then." puts the deputy in the trunk and drives off to Mayor Bob's house. Once there, he goes in, checks the refrigerator, and proceeds to make a phone call to the State Troopers (asking for a job, then telling them he'll be ready to take it when he gets out of jail). All of this with the Mayor's wife right there watching game shows, totally unaware that Chapel is in the kitchen using her phone. He goes and puts his car in the garage (Hubbel in the trunk), leaves the car running, and closes the garage door. Off to see KC. He sets KC up with a badge and sends her out to Bob's to rescue and intimidate Hubble by making him think Chapel is a mob hit man, sent by Broll. Meanwhile, Chapel stops into the bar and makes everyone nervous by bringing up the late Watkins. JJ the bartender takes him in the back for a talk, and Chapel breaks the guy's nose. Broll shows up and pulls a gun on Chapel, who convinces him to ride with him (chapel) out to mayor Bob's house. When they get there, KC has Hubbel convinced he's busted and he's spilling the beans in spades which Broll can hear because, of course, Chapel has planted a listening device near the confession. Chapel convinces Broll that he's been sent by organized crime boss, Joey Lazaro (calling in a Favor from the now imprisoned crime boss by having him personally call Broll), to help clean up Broll's trouble with the dead deputy and to horn in on Broll's operation in Eden. So now, Broll and Chapel are "buds" and Broll is mad at Hubbel. Hubbel almost escapes when he realizes KC is NOT a cop, but she is brilliant in making him think she has a gun at his head, cuffs him, and leaves him there for the Troopers to find. Methinks KC is really getting into this revenge gig, by now. She's great. Chapel goes to the hospital to check on the couple who are witnesses against Broll. He's sent in a Doctor (who owes The Favor) to take care of the wounded hubby. BUT, JJ's caught Chapel talking to the wife and reports back to Broll, who is told by Chapel that the couple needed to be intimidated into keeping mum. Broll wants Chapel to kill the wife (prove his loyalty, as it were) and sends JJ with him to make sure. Once in the car, Chapel elbows JJ AGAIN, in his already broken nose, and disarms him. They meet the wife in her motel, and Chapel sends her into hiding, cause "You're supposed to be dead", and he proceeds to make JJ his own lackey. JJ says, "You aren't gonna hit me again, are you?" and Chapel says, "Yes, JJ. Yes, I am". And he does. Heh, heh, heh. He ties up JJ to wait for State Troopers. Broll is made suspicious of Mayor Bob when he discovers Chapel's call to the State Troopers on Bob's phone records. He decides the deputy's body has to be moved and wants Chapel to dispose of it so the Troopers won't find it. He has the body uncovered by the time Chapel arrives, with State Troopers hot on his heels. He leaves the Bad Cop holding the bag (in this case, the body) and disappears. Everyone is busted and everyone describes this mysterious Chapel as a hitman, a reporter (the Mayor), and various other things which sound ridiculous to the Troopers, of course. The trio is busted. Case fixed. Chapel calls the freed couple (from across the street, watching them be happy and safe) and wishes them well, saying "You'll be hearing from me." then fades into the sunset. When I say ya had to be there, I mean it. These little diaries cannot begin to convey the cleverness and joy of watching this man at work.
