What Hammer films mean to me: The Hammers of the late 50s-mid 60s formed a
bridge between old horror and new. Along with the emerging Italian Gothic
genre and the AIP Poe films, they both paid homage to the classics of the 30s
and 40s, and brought the genre to a new and exciting level. Unfortunately,
these films also introduced increasingly graphic depictions of violence and
gore, and laid the foundations for the kinds of horror films we have today. I
still haven't seen many of the Hammer films. My interest in horror films in
general ends around 1970. I try to avoid modern horrors as much as possible.
