When a nuclear submarine is lost, a deep sea drilling rig and her crew are asked to help a Navy SEAL team to search for survivors as a hurricane moves in on their position topside. No survivors are found, but a deep sea encounter with an alien lifeform causes both surprise and alarm. When an accident topside, caused by the hurricane, cuts the rig off from it topside feed, SEAL team leader Lt. Coffey, played supremely well by Michael Biehn, perceives a serious threat to his mission, suspecting the Russians of trying to steal the nuclaer warheads from the wreck of the submarine. Already suffering the debilitating effects of HPNS (High Pressure Nervous Syndrome) and succumbing to his paranoia, Coffey tries to defend and protect the nuclear submarine from the Russians by bringing one of the nuclear warheads aboard the rig. This in turn draws the attention of the alien society that dwells at the bottom of the Abyss.
