Michael Biehn stars as Garnet Montrose, a badly scarred World War II veteran, who writes letters to the Widow Rance, whom he loves, rather than inflict his disfigured countenance upon her. He enlists the aid of a young man named Daventry to deliver the letters on his behalf, but it soon becomes clear that Daventry has fallen under the widow's spell.
