A. The 1960 movie, inspired by Japanese director Akira Kurosawa' s The Seven Samurai, starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter and Horst Buchholz as the seven gunmen. (Lee Marvin wasn't in this one.) Now CBS is offering us the Magnificent Seven TV series in place of Dr. Quinn on Saturdays until the Olympics starts. The TV seven are Dale Midkiff, Michael Biehn, Eric Close, Ron Perlman, Rick Worthy, Anthony Starke and Andrew Kavovit.

The movie western, based on a Japanese classic, The Seven Samurai, featured a cast of household names, including Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Charles Bronson and Robert Vaughn, who defended a group of Mexican peasants from bandits.
The TV cast includes Michael Biehn, Eric Close, Dale Midkiff, Ron Perlman and Rick Worthy. CBS hopes all will be more recognizable by March.

think about...mid-season replacements!

CBS' Tom Selleck comedy has the highest profile; the oft-delayed sitcom, as yet untitled, would star Selleck as a playboy publisher and might test on Mondays soon after the Winter Olym pics in February. Also in the CBS comedy hamper, most likely in Wednesday slots: Style & Substance, starring former Designing woman Jean Smart as a Martha Stewart type; and The Simple Life, Judith Light's first sitcom since the failed Phenom. As for drama, expect a series remake of the classic 1960 Western The Magnificent Seven, starring Michael Biehn (The Terminator).

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (CBS, TV-14-V)
The Western returns (thanks partly to an internet campaign by its fans) in force, as a by-the-book federal marshal takes over the town, outlawing guns and leaving it helpless against a band of arson-minded cattle ranchers. This, of course, will not stand, as even Mary (Laurie Holden, above) takes aim against the baddies. Keep your eyes peeled for a bodacious cameo by NYPD Blue's Lola Glaudini as a helpful whore. B+

'The Magnificent Seven' / 8 p.m. CBS

In the wild and woolly frontier that is prime-time TV, westerns are rare as 40 shares. So as Saturday night alternatives go, perhaps that bodes well for this new series inspired by the splendid 1960 shoot-'em-up. In place of the magnificent Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, James Coburn & Co. is a cast consisting of Michael Biehn ('The Terminator'), Ron Perlman ('Beauty and the Beast'), Eric Close ('Dark Skies') and Dale Midkiff ('Time Trax'). And, yes, CBS has retained the triumphant theme song, which is a good start.

Hollywood refashioned the action-adventure into the popular 1960 western 'The Magnificent Seven,' starring Yul Brynner. Now, 'The Magnificent Seven' rides onto the small screen as a weekly CBS series. Michael Biehn, Ron Perlman and Eric Close head the cast of the shoot-'em-up, which kicks off with a two-hour movie Saturday at 8 p.m. on Channel 2.

Brian Lowry A revival of 'The Magnificent Seven,' starring Michael Biehn, shot up the competition Saturday, as the premiere - with most prime-time regulars airing reruns - blasted its way into the week's Top 10. The CBS series will hold down the fort usually occupied by 'Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman' for six weeks, until the Winter Olympics.

San Diego Union Tribune    August 6, 1997  MTV's Fuentes Will Add ABC's 'Funniest' to Daisy Chain    Some 'Magnificent' news for western fans. CBS has lassoed a new oater - once a TV staple but now a rarity - for next season. The Eye Network had ordered six one-hour episodes and a two-hour movie based on the 1960 big-screen film 'The Magnificent Seven.'

Ron Perlman (the beat in 'Beauty and the Beast') and Michael Biehn ('The Terminator') lead the cast.

'The Magnificent Seven' revolves around seven gunslingers who band together to fight for those unable to fight for themselves.

The original film, with its memorable Elmer Bernstein score, starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Eli Wallach, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn and Horst Buchholz. A CBS spokesman said the network hopes to use the famous music in the series, but hasn't finalized arrangements.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch v January 8, 1998 New shows Aren't Blockbusters, But 'Style' Shows Some Promise  Gail Pennington Another new entry, 'The Magnificent Seven,' is filling the 'Dr. Quinn' space at 7 p.m. Saturdays for five weeks, after last Saturday' s two-hour premiere.
Based on the movie, which was based on that other movie, 'Seven' is a '90s mix of sensitivity and shoot-'em-up. Michael Biehn smolders as gunfighter Chris Larabee, leader of the loose band of do-gooders for hire, and Eric Close ('Dark Skies') is adorable as bounty-hunter Vin. In fact, all the guys are pretty hunky.
On the minus side, 'Seven' is too violent (especially for a 7 p.m. time slot) and too full of Western stereotypes. To work, the show will have to get behind those handsome faces and develop characters we can connect with. Some new plots would help, too; this week's story, in which the guys ride to the rescue of abused prostitutes, has a distinctly 'Unforgiven' ring.
