Ron Rains (Alan Spaulding)
Ron Raines joined the cast of Guiding Light in the role of the nefarious Alan Spaulding in July 1994.
Ron, who comes from a family of Texas gospel singers, was introduced to the world of entertainment while performing in church and high school glee clubs. Since that time, he has enjoyed a singing career for over two decades in American musical theater.
His extensive list of credits include: the 1992 Broadway revival of Showboat with Donald O'Connor; Teddy and Alice with Len Cariou, also on Broadway; touring with the national production of The Unsinkable Molly Brown with Debbie Reynolds; and the international production of Can Can with Chita Rivera and The Rockettes. He also has numerous New York and regional theater credits to his name.
Ron debuted with the New York City Opera in The Merry Widow and has sung in various productions with the Michigan Opera Theatre, including Side by Side with Nancy Dussault. Other performances include A Little Night Music; Man of La Mancha; The Merry Widow, with Cleo Laine; and Follies, for which he was nominated for Best Actor by the Detroit Free Press.
He has recorded the role of Daddy Warbucks on a recording commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Broadway musical Annie, and has also recorded the roles of Sid in The Pajama Game and Robert in Wonderful Town. He recorded his first solo album of Broadway songs at Abbey Road in London, which was released in the spring of 1997.
He has appeared in concerts across the country as a soloist with the Baltimore Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Rochester Symphony, Philadelphia Pops, Sacramento Symphony Orchestra, Tulsa Pops, National Symphony (Washington, DC), Omaha Symphony, and the Springfield (Massachusetts) Symphony. These days, Ron can often be heard singing the national anthem at New York Knicks, Rangers, and New Jersey Devils games.
On television, in addition to appearing on Guiding Light, Ron has appeared on One Life to Live and Big Brother Jake.
Growing up, Ron attended five high schools before graduating from Nacogdoches High School in Texas. He attended Southern Nazarene University, then transferred to Oklahoma City University, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree. He also was a member of The American Opera Center at The Juilliard School.
He and his wife, stage director Dona D. Vaughn, met while they were both performing in Rose Marie for the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. They have one daughter. Born on December 2 in Texas City, Texas, Ron is the oldest of three children. His father, a retired city judge and minister, and his mother, a retired newspaper employee, raised their family in Nacogdoches.
