MARIJUANA - The Facts
Introduction The Effects
Marijuana, also spelled marihuana,
is a drug made from the dried
leaves and flowering tops of the
hemp plant. It has various psychological and physical
effects. People usually smoke it
in cigarettes or pipes, but it
can also be mixed in with food and drinks. Many countries have laws prohibiting the cultivation, distribution, posession and use of marijuana.

Marijuana has many nicknames,
including grass, pot and weed.
It is also called cannabis, a
word that comes from 'Cannabis
sativa', the scientific name
for hemp.
There are more than 400 chemicals in marijuana and when smoked, it produces more than 2000. These chemicals have a variety of short and long term effects.

Short term effects include physical and psychological reactions, lasting for 3-5 hours after smoking:
* A 'high' consisting of changes to the users feelings and thoughts.
* Redness in the eyes.
* A rapid heartbeat.
* Interference with judgement and coordination.

Long term effects aren't completely known but the effects are believed to be similar to that of tobacco smoking (eg.Bronchitis, coughing and chest pain)
Why Do People Use Marijuana?
Most people who use marijuana begin to do so between the ages of 12 and 18. The majority of them try it out of curiosity and people whose close friends use marijuana are the most likely to try it. Most people believe it improves their tallents and capabilities, but scientists have found no proof of this. Marijuana may increase a person's willingness to accept new ideas without determining wether they are true or false and as a result, some uses believe marijuanagives them a new understanding of life.

Many people who try marijuana use it only a few times or infrequently, but some become addicted and start using regularly. Some become so dependent on the drug that they have great difficulty in giving it up.

So think about it. Why would you smoke marijuana? What good will come out of it? Before you even consider trying it, take into account the information on this webpage and hopefully you will make the right decision.
